Costa Rican authorities reject
proposal on a humanitarian
corridor for Nicaraguans

It is not feasible and unrealistic to create a "humanitarian corridor" or special zone that would be located in the northern zone, to assist thousands of Nicaraguans seeking to leave their country, said the Ministry of Foreign Relations on Tuesday.

A humanitarian corridor is a type of temporary zone intended to allow the safe transit of humanitarian aid in, and/or refugees out of a crisis region.

According to the Ministry, they rejected the proposal by a Nicaraguan human rights organization to create an area in the northern zone of Costa Rica to help Nicaraguans.

"This is not included in future actions in the region."

The ministry responded to the news that the Nicaraguan Pro-Human Rights Association (ANPDH) requested the creation of a "Special Zone" as a humane corridor to house Nicaraguans who would leave their country in search of refuge.

According to Álvaro Leiva Sánchez, president of ANPDH, in a letter presented to the government on June 17, which has since disseminated on social networks, there would be an estimated 13,000 thousand Nicaraguans who would try to enter Costa Rica in July and September.

For this arrival of immigrants, the association asked President Carlos Alvarado to create the humanitarian corridor zone to guarantee the human rights of the people participating in the Nicaraguan caravan.

Given this request, the authorities clarify that the Government is carrying out coordinated efforts between different institutions that have been in the field for months, such as the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Public Security, the General Directorate of Migration, the Social Security, among others. The institutions gave an effective response on the rejection of more than 13,000 people  who intended to enter the country unauthorized.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Security reported  15,580 foreigners, mainly from Nicaragua, have been rejected to enter the country.

According to Rodolfo Solano Quirós, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the government is also developing a health cooperation plan in the northern zone with the agencies of the United Nations accredited in Costa Rica, but this project has nothing to do with the proposal of the aforementioned association.

The goal is "to maintain a sanitary safe northern zone, showing that the Government's main concern is the safety and health of Costa Ricans," Solano said.
