The
British Community plans Guy
Fawkes celebration in Jacó
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
The British community in Costa
Rica is planning its Guy Fawkes
Beach Weekend 2019 at the Hotel Club del
Mar in Jacó*, Nov. 1 to 3.
"This fun-packed,
family-friendly beach weekend
features, games, entertainment,
beach bonfire, and the best
fireworks display in Costa
Rica," said the British
Community in its statement.
According to the British Tourist
Authority, Guy Fawkes Night,
often called Bonfire or Firework
Night, is an annual evening of
fireworks and bonfires held
across the country. People love
to wrap up warm in scarves and
woolly hats, and head out with
loved ones to ooh and aaah at
the colorful displays. Scarves
and woolly hats probably will
not be needed in Jacó
The night marks the failure of
the Gunpowder Plot Nov. 5, 1605,
when a group of embittered
Catholic conspirators planned to
blow up Parliament and kill the
Protestant King James I.
Although the plot was
masterminded by Robert Catesby,
and involved many other
conspirators, the plot bears the
name of Guy Fawkes because he
was the one caught in the cellar
below the House of Lords with 36
barrels of gunpowder. Effigies
of Guy, wearing his distinctive
tall black hat, are often burned
on bonfires.
"Guy Fawkes Night is a
celebration in recognition that
had the Gunpowder Plot been
successful, it would have
changed the course of British
history," said the British
Tourist Authority in its
statement.
In Costa Rica the weekend
celebration rates start from
$335 for two nights for two
people including breakfast and
all activities such as quiz,
beach rounders, horseshoe
competition, darts championship,
kids activities, DJ music,
welcome drink, Saturday
lunchtime poolside BBQ, Saturday
night buffet dinner and
complimentary late Sunday check
out for those who stay for
lunch.
