Hospital ship
to finish the medical
mission here Saturday

The U.S. Navy hospital ship
Comfort is ending its mission
Saturday. The ship arrived in Puntarenas*
Sunday 21 to offer free medical
care for five days.
"The purpose of this mission is
for U.S. service members and
medical professionals to work
alongside partner and host nation
medical specialists to provide
medical assistance and help
relieve pressure on health systems
strained by the Venezuelan
migration crisis," said the U.S.
Comfort in its statement.
Medical services were offered in
the gym El Coloso in Barranca and
at the Association of Pensioners
of Puntarenas in Chacarita.
According to Social Security, five
Costa Rican doctors were part of
the crew. They are Gina Víquez
Rojas, medical specialist in
emergency medicine, Pablo
Rodríguez Chaves, a physician the
health area, Carolina Leal Zúñiga,
a pharmacist, Vladimir Briceño
Elizondo, and Hubert Zamora Mena
emergency medicine specialists.
One of the goals of the
humanitarian mission was to help
Venezuelans who have had to leave
their country and have had to
migrate to other nations of the
continent. A group of Venezuelan
refugees in Costa Rica moved to
receive medical attention from
specialists. The ambassador of
Venezuela in Costa Rica, María
Faría, was in Puntarenas for the
opening ceremony.
"Thank you for the friendship,
cooperation and solidarity of the
United States with the most
vulnerable and especially with the
thousands of Venezuelan migrants
fleeing our country because of
poverty, hunger, shortage of
medicines," said Faría.
“We are proud to work with
Ambassador Faría and Costa Rica to
provide Comfort medical services
to Venezuelans, as well as
Nicaraguans, Costa Ricans and
others in need,” said Gloria
Berbena, the chargé d'affaires at
the U.S. Embassy.
This week's mission marks the
second visit of Comfort to
Puntarenas. During Continuing
Promise 2011, medical teams
treated more than 7,000 patients
aboard Comfort and at several
medical sites in the vicinity of
Puntarenas, said the hospital ship
authorities in its statement.
