By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Costa Rican firefighters have reported that nine people died in fires in their homes already this year. Four of them died Wednesday morning.

According to statistics provided by firefighters, on average four fires are attended per day. There already have been 250 fire alerts reported.

The deceased were two children, three women and four men.

The most recent emergency, where a whole family died, happened at dawn Wednesday.

According to the report, the fire burned a house in the community of Moravia, in San José Province. Despite the prompt response, it was not possible to save any of the family members who lived there, said firemen.

"The alert was received at 2:57 a.m. and the arrival of the first firefighters unit was at 3:03 a.m.," said the report.

Firefighters reported four victims, the father, 53, the mother, 50, a daughter 24, and a son, 22.

According to the initial investigation, the fire started between the kitchen and living room.

Firefighters' theory is that the family tried to run away from the flames to the backyard of the house. However, they failed to get out of danger alive. Their bodies were found near the property wall. Specialists continue to investigate the causes of the fire.

The emergency brought firefighter units from Guadalupe, Tibás and San José, said the report.

The authorities said they recommend installing detectors devices in homes and establishing a family exit plan in case of fire.
