Judicial agents are again looking
for U.S. citizen Anne Patton

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Agents from the criminal investigation department of the Judicial Investigation Organization, know as OIJ, are requesting information from the public to find the location of U.S. citizen Anne Patton, who was on trial three times for the alleged 2010 murder of her former husband John Felix Bender.

According to the agents, Patton is wanted by the organization for "police matters."

However, the agents clarify "the person is investigated by the OIJ, for various circumstances, including for information on investigations or, as witnesses of a case and not necessarily as indicted."

Judicial agents requested the public to provide any information to the Confidential Information Center at 800-800-0645 through the WhatsApp platform number 8800-0645.

In May 2018, the Pérez Zeledón criminal court announced the start of a new trial in the murder of Bender, an American citizen. He died in January 2010 at his mansion located in Barú in Pérez Zeledón in the southern zone of the country. The cause of the death was a gunshot to the head.

In June 2017 the Public Ministry confirmed that Anne Patton, Bender's wife and main suspect of the crime will face a fourth trial. Prosecutors again will try to prove that the death of her husband Bender was a homicide and not a suicide. There still are unanswered questions about how his head wound took place.

Prosecutors have said that Patton killed her husband. However, the defense insists the death is a suicide. She was the only witness to his death.

Due to flaws in the investigation, evidence collection and the lack of consistency of witnesses in previous trials, the woman was acquitted two times and convicted once.

Now, the authorities want a fourth opportunity to prove that Bender's death was, in fact, a murder.

According to the case, the couple arrived at Costa Rica at the beginning of the last decade. They chose the community of Barú to to establish a wildlife refuge. They built a luxurious house in a mountainous area and started their project.

However, Bender slowly became depressed, according to his wife in an interview provided to 48 Hours, a CBS show aired in 2013.

Several researchers of that program insisted that the foreigners had problems with the locals and that there were serious errors in the handling of the crime scene by the judicial police.

In August 2013 Patton was acquitted for the murder of her husband.

In May 2014, Patton was convicted and sentenced to 22 years in prison.

In February 2015 the Court of Appeals revoked the sentence and ordered a new trial.

In September 2015, in the third trial, Patton was again acquitted.

In June 2017, the Court of Appeals annuls the acquittal and ordered the fourth trial.

In May 2018, the Prosecutor's Office of Pérez Zeledón reported that it is expected to set a date for a fourth trial.

After her last acquittal, Patton returned to the United States. Her lawyers here have been involved in judicial proceedings to obtain a collection of jewels that the couple brought to Costa Rica.

Customs officials have claimed the jewels are smuggled goods.

There also is a dispute over a million in assets that the wife says a trusted adviser took.

The case has been in the international news, especially in the United States where multiple trials for the same crime are prohibited.

In February 2018, the CBS news channel program "48 hours" released a special coverage of the case. The conclusion of the forensic specialist can be reached at CBS site
