A Mexican citizen was jailed on Tuesday as a suspect of leading a drug trafficking gang, according to an investigation carried out by Drug Control Police officers.

According to the police report, the Mexican citizen, surnamed Cruz, along with two Costa Ricans, surnamed Araya -Sandí and Duarte- Cruz, were detained in Limón Province for an alleged involvement in drug shipments to Mexico.

The main suspect Cruz and his two employees were allegedly distributing cocaine to other drug traffickers who were shipping the drug to Central American countries and Mexico, said the police in its report.

The three men were arrested during several raids that took place in the early hours of Tuesday in the cantons of Moín and Liverpool in Limón Province. There were also raids in the Turrubares canton in San José Province.

Once the agents reviewed the international police source, INTERPOL, it was confirmed that the Mexican citizen had a criminal record in the U.S. This was not his first drug-related offense. He was charged with drug trafficking in 1998, said the police.

In addition to the arrests of the suspects, the police seized 1,000 Mexican pesos and $450 in cash.

According to the case report, at the beginning of the investigation in 2019, police reported that another Costa Rican named Duarte - Maravilla, who had also been linked to the same group of gangsters, had been arrested.

It is reported that a vehicle was used for the transportation of 225 kilos of cocaine. Police managed to find and seize the drugs. That specific vehicle was registered in Duarte's name, police said.

The three men detained on Tuesday were taken to the cells of the Public Ministry where they were interrogated by judicial agents, and a judge ordered them to three months of pre-trial prison.

Should the authorities prohibit foreigners with criminal records from entering the country?
