More than 500 foreigners
rejectedto enter the country By the A.M. Costa Rica staff On Sunday 530 foreigners were detained at the immigration post in the north and south borders of the country, reported the immigration police. In the southern border with Nicaragua there were detained 511 people after entering the country despite the presidential order issued last week to prohibit the entry of foreigners to the country, according to reports. The people were taken to the cells of the General Directorate of Migration where officers proceeded with the corresponding rejection order to enter the country, said the police. In a second operation, in the area of the southern border with Panama, 19 foreigners were detained who also tried to enter the country. Likewise, they were returned to Panama with a rejection order to enter Costa Rica. On Monday, the Vice President Epsy Campbell Barr, made a trip to the canton of Los Chiles, in the northern zone of the country, along with other government authorities to inspect the border protection operation that began last week. "In defense of Costa Rican public health to avoid further contagion from the covid-19 coronavirus, we proceeded Thursday with the closing of borders to foreign people, in compliance with the decree issued by the president," Campbell said. "Rejection is the police action that prevents entry to the national territory to all those who violate the actual command." Authorities expect an increase in the entry of foreigners during Easter. They are taking a stronger stance to protect the borders. According to data provided by the Directorate of Immigration, 3,867 sanitary orders have been issued to people who recently entered the country. Most of the people entered through the Juan Santamaría International Airport in Alajuela Province. The sanitary order establishes that people must remain in their homes as obligatory isolation for two weeks. According to the Vice-Minister of Health Dennis Angulo, the person who breaks this sanitary order could receive a sentence of up to three years in prison. "We make an emphatic call to all those to whom we have issued a sanitary order to respect the quarantine and not expose the rest of the population," Angulo said. "They must remain at home as a preventive measure, to avoid further contagion from the covid-19. " ![]() Foreigners who entered the country as tourists between December 17, 2019 to March 23, and are still in Costa Rica will now have their tourist visa expiration dates extended, according to the General Directorate of Migration ruled last week. The extension is one of several preventative measures authorities have taken to fight the spread of coronavirus covid-19. The expiration period for tourist visas has been extended until May 17. This applies to all tourists who are living in the country. Foreigners must proceed with the corresponding procedure to renew the tourist visa or leave the country once the extension period has ended. Procedures for resident credentials renewals must be done online by email, previous_ccss@migracion.go.cr. Procedures for renewal of Residency Identification Cards, or DIMEX ID’s, will only be available through appointments at Banco de Costa Rica and Correos de Costa Rica. Appointments will not be allowed in the Migration facilities. The renewal appointments of temporary residence for a Costa Rican spouse must be requested through email, previous_ccss@migracion.go.cr. Other types of procedures related to the renovation of residency credentials may also be requested at any Banco de Costa Rica or Correos de Costa Rica branches. The refugee application procedures must also be requested by email, refugio@migracion.go.cr. The changes immediately began last week and will run until May 17. The entry of people at immigration facilities is not allowed until mid- May. Authorities will announce further changes after May 18. The country remains in a state of emergency over the covid-19 pandemic, according to a government decree released last week. The decree allows the use of government funds to finance needs such as purchasing supplies or attending emergencies in any part of the country, due to the increase in cases of coronavirus. Until April 12, only Costa Ricans can enter the country. This order applies at all immigration entry points by sea, air and land. Exempt the crew of air transport, commerce or supplies services. Also, Costa Ricans who enter during the restriction will have to perform mandatory preventive isolation for 14 days, ordered by the ministry. For more information about changes to foreign immigration services can be found at the General Directorate of Migration phone lines 506-1311 or (506) 2299-8100. --------------------------- Have you heard about an expat who must renew their tourist visa during this time?
