Government promotes
organizationin the municipalities By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Of the country's 82 municipalities or local governments, only 41 have developed an updated regulatory plan for protecting the environment and attracting investment to their cantons, according to government data. Of the 82 municipalities, 20 are in the process of preparing the plan and 21 have not developed any. According to the government, the regulatory plan establishes the territorial growth, social, economic and environmental development of the canton. The plan sets regulations to define where it can be built and urbanized, in harmony with the environment and natural resources. The plan is a mechanism that contributes to reducing vulnerability, managing risk and adaptation, and increasing resilience to hydro-meteorological events related to climate change. “Starting from the fact that the elaboration of the regulatory plans is the responsibility of each municipality, we have begun a joint effort to facilitate that more and more cantons have their plan that regulates and orders their territory, allowing sustainable development, investment and economic reactivation hand in hand with the protection of natural resources, ” said first lady Claudia Dobles in the presentation of the regulatory plan for the municipalities. According to information provided by the government the 41 municipalities with current regulatory plans are: Alajuela, Alvarado, Belén, Buenos Aires, Cañas, Cartago, Coto Brus, Corredores, Curridabat, Desamparados, El Guarco, Escazú, Esparza, Flores, Garabito, Goicoechea, Golfito, Grecia, La Unión , Liberia, Limón, Montes de Oca, Mora, Moravia, Nicoya, Oreamuno, Osa, Paraíso, Parrita, Pérez Zeledón, Pococí, Puntarenas, Quepos, San Carlos, San Isidro, San José, Santa Ana, Santa Cruz, Tilarán, Valverde Vega, and Vázquez de Coronado. In 2019 all municipalities were called to provide information on the progress of their regulatory plans, said a representative from the government. Should municipalities speed up the process of developing a development plan? We would like to know your thoughts on this story. Send your comments to news@amcostarica.com More stories
