Trump freezes travel and commerce with Europe By the A.M. Costa Rica staff U.S. President Donald Trump took the dramatic step Tuesday of freezing travel and commerce between his country and Europe for 30 days to stem coronavirus infections. Trump specifically exempted the United Kingdom from his order, he said as he explained his actions in a television broadcast to the American people. There was no mention of Latin America. The president said that Americans have become infected by people who have entered the country from Europe, and he blamed European officials for not taking early action to prevent the spread of the disease. He said while he froze travel between the United States and China, the European Union did not. Trump also announced a series of measures to benefit businesses that will be hit hard by reaction to the virus. He said the Small Business Administration would make available loans to offset financial damages in the form of low interest loans. He said he would ask Congress to approve $50 billion in additional funding for this purpose. He also said he has prevailed on health insurers to waive co-payments and extend insurance coverage for those affected by the virus. He also said that his administration was cutting massive amounts of red tape to make anti-viral treatments available in record time. In addition he said he would seek congressional approval to cut payroll taxes and also allow late tax payments without interest for those affected by the virus. Trump said he was open to ending the freeze on European travel earlier than 30 days if there was improvement in containing the virus. In addition, American citizens could travel from Europe under certain conditions, he said. He noted that he just signed into law an $8.3 billion bill to help the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and other agencies to fight the virus and to support treatment and the distribution of medical supplies. Virus testing capabilities are increasing day by day, the president said, adding that “We are moving very quickly.” He also said that the risk from the coronavirus for the vast majority of Americans was very low. “Young and healthy people can expect to recover fully and quickly if they should get the virus.” Vulnerable elderly people should take special precautions, he said, adding that his administration was urging that nursing homes to restrict non-essential visits. “Smart action today will prevent the spread of the virus tomorrow,” said Trump. For all Americans it is essential that everyone take extra precautions and practice good hygiene, he said. He said he would take action to provide financial support to those who are ill, quarantines or caring for someone who is. Trump said that the U.S. economy and institutions were solid, thanks to the economic prosperity encouraged by his administration “This is not a financial crisis,” said Trump of the impact. “This is just a temporary moment in time that we will overcome together as a nation and as a world.” ----------------------------------- How will the freeze on U.S.-European travel affect you?
