Ferry between Costa Rica and El Salvador starts Friday
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
The Pacific Port Institute said that the ferry service between Costa Rica and El Salvador is scheduled to begin Friday.
According to the institute, officials in El Salvador reported that the inauguration of the ferry operation will take place in Puerto La Unión. The route runs to the port of Caldera in Puntarenas.
According to the institute, this new commercial route has been agreed upon in El Salvador since last June before the inauguration of President Nayib Bukele.
According to Juan Ramón Rivera, president of the institute, officials in Costa Rica are accomplishing a non-refundable loan with the Central American Bank for Economic Integration of $350,000 to be used to adapt the area within the port of Caldera to carry out the ferry operations.
According to statistics from the institute, the rest of Central America is a key partner for the country because it represents the second market for Costa Rican exports with 20.7% of its total shipments and 6.63% of its imports.
Also, 88.54% of trades, exports and imports, are made by land, which were affected by the crisis in Nicaragua in 2018 when there was the closure of land borders, making it impossible to transfer goods, said the institute.
