This year, between January to August, exports increased $2 billion, compared to the same period of 2020, announced the Ministry of Exports. According to the Ministry, even though in percentage terms they are the same for the period between January to July (27%), the total exports figure is $9.5 billion. This is the highest growth in exports of goods during this period in the last five years, the ministry said in its statement. In 2017 the increase was 8%, in 2018 it was 6%, in 2019 it was 1%, in 2020 there was a drop of 2% mainly as a side effect of the pandemic. Among the most important export sectors are: the metalworking industry that grew 65%; the electrical industry that grew 47%;and precision and medical equipment grew 42%. One of the lower exports, livestock and fishing sector, experienced a 1% growth. They were in negative numbers in the previous months. “A year ago a process of recovery of the export sector began, which today is already showing signs of consolidation with this overwhelming increase of 27%, '' Andrés Valenciano, Minister of Exports said. According to the ministry, among the agricultural products with the highest export are the pineapple making $76 million and frozen fruits with $21 million. Costa Rica also saw a change in countries buying more from Costa Rica. Among the regions buying more are: South America which grew 56%, the Caribbean grew 34%, Central America grew 29%, North America and Asia grew 28%. ![]() During this month, Costa Rican exporting companies are offering their products at the Buyers Trade Mission fair to find new markets. ------------------------ What should the ministry do to increase exports in the livestock and fishing sector?
