After one year of the reopening of the international airports in August 2020,  to visitors for  reinvigorate the tourism sector since its shutdown in March 2020 following the National Decree of Health Emergency for the covid-19, August 2021 is the highest number of visitors.

Last month, the country registered 21,969 tourists coming from Europe by air, announced the Institute of Tourism.

According to the Institute, this number represents almost 60% of the entry of European travelers registered during the same month of 2019, before the pandemic.

According to data from the General Directorate of Migration provided by the Institute, of the total arrival of tourists in August, there were 8,790 from Spain, 2,626 from Germany, 2,601 from France, 1,115 from Switzerland, 711 from the UK, 660 from the Netherlands, and the rest from other countries.

"Despite the travel restrictions established by the European Union for its citizens, these figures are encouraging for the gradual recovery of the tourism sector in Costa Rica and generate optimism for the end of the year and the beginning of the high season," Gustavo J. Segura, Minister of Tourism said. "In August, the country registered a total entry by air of 114,227 tourists from several countries, which is equivalent to 66% compared to the same month of 2019.”

Tourists from the United States remain in the top spot of tourists visiting the country. So far this month of August, the Institute has registered 75,407 tourists from the United States, which is equivalent to 80% of the same month in 2019, before the pandemic, the institute said.

From January to August, between all ports of entry, there have been 793,391 tourists registered in Costa Rica. Of these, 758,591 have entered through the two main international airports, the Juan Santamaría in Alajuela Province and the Daniel Oduber in Guanacaste Province.

Recently, arrived of the first cruise of the 2021-2022 season  at Golfito Port as part of the reopening of the port to cruise lines  since its shutdown in March 2020.
