Digital animation exports are up in Costa Rica, says study

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Digital animations produced in Costa Rica and exported increased 2019. This is because 42% of companies engaged in this activity export their services. In addition, 40% of total revenue comes from international clients.

These results are according to the recent study Profile of digital animation in Costa Rica carried out by Costa Rica's Export Promotion Agency, known as PROCOMER by its acronym in Spanish. According to PROCOMER, the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the U.K. are the main markets for the sale of digital animation services.

"There are also companies with experiences in co-production of digital animation with partners in Ireland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Uruguay and Colombia, as well as distributors of world-class content such as Disney, Cartoon Network, Discovery and Dreamworks TV," said PROCOMER in its statement.

According to the organization, the global digital animation market was valued in 2018 for $ 270 billion and average growth of 4% is projected through 2022. The main products are video streaming, visual effects in the film industry and greater access to content by children.

The PROCOMER analysis shows that in the country there are more than 62 digital animation services companies that are developed both in the advertising area and also in series and short films.

According to the study, in 2016 the audiovisual industry generated 0.4% of the country's gross domestic product, where digital animation represented 1% within this category, that is, about $ 2.8 million with an annual growth of 3% on average during the last five years.

"Although it is still a small sector in our country, it generates more than 500 employees," said Marta Esquivel, of PROCOMER. "The majority of companies, 65%, started operations seven years or less, while 9% have extensive experience in the market of 15 years or more. "

According to the study, some of the challenges for these companies are the limited supply of public funds and the lack of international co-production agreements, among others.
