Costa Rica recognized as the country with the most uterine cancer survivors

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Social Security announced Wednesday that the country was recognized as the one with the largest number of survivors of cervical cancer in the world.

The information is based on the study entitled "Facts and Statistics of Cancer at a Global Level" by the American Cancer Society.

According to Social Security, the result is due to prevention and care programs to address this disease.

The good rating is due to "the strategies that the institution implemented so that the country has a high capacity to detect patients with cervical cancer," said Roy Wong, a Social Security epidemiologist.

"The Human Papillomavirus vaccine is the main tool to prevent this disease," said Ileana Quirós, coordinator of the Cervix Cancer Care Plan. "That is why it is important that 10-year-old girls supplement the second dose of this vaccine, which will begin to be vaccinated in ebais starting Dec. 3." The ebais are the Social Security community clinics.

According to Social Security statistics, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women and the second type that causes the most deaths in Latin America and the Caribbean. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus.

According to the report of the American Cancer Society in Costa Rica, 78% of women diagnosed with cervical cancer survived five years after diagnosis.

Costa Rica is above countries such as South Korea where survival is 77%, or Canada, Italy and Israel, where 67% survive that long, said Social Security authorities.

According to specialists, currently every 3.5 days on average a woman dies from this type of cancer in the country. However, 15 years ago, a woman died on average every 1.5 days of the same disease. This reflects an increase in life expectancy after having developed the disease, said Social Security.

According to Social Security statistics, the places with greater numbers of women with this type of cancer are in Puntarenas, Limón and Guanacaste.

This month, Social Security announced  the start of the second round of the vaccination campaign against papillomavirus for 10-year-old girls.

Parents should take girls who have already had the first dose of papillomavirus vaccine to their community clinic on Dec. 3 or thereafter to receive the second dose of the vaccine to complete their schedule.

According to Social Security, this second dose is necessary to complete the protection against the papillomavirus, which is the cause of cervical cancer, one of the most common cancers among women in the country.

This first year the vaccination is being done at two locations. The first dose was given at school during the scheduled visits for tetanus vaccine. Now the second will be at the community clinic because in December there are no classes in schools.

According to the vaccine protocol, at least six months should lapse after the first dose to receive the second dose.

For example, girls who were vaccinated on 3 June can be vaccinated as of Dec. 3, said the Social Security.

According to data provided by Social Security, the coverage of the first dose reached 81% of the target group. This means that 29,450 girls received the first dose across the country.

Next year both doses will be applied at school: one at the beginning of the school year and one at the end, Social Security said in its statement.

Should the authorities increase measures for early detection of uterine cancer in the provinces where more cases have been recorded?
