Coffee production in Tilarán will be carbon neutral
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
The Rural Development Institute donated Tuesday $509,272 for the purchase of equipment that will allow 380 coffee producers in Tilarán, Guanacaste, to be carbon neutral, that is, to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and offset emissions.
Part of the donation was also delivered to Abangares producers in Guanacaste and Monteverde in Puntarenas Province.
According to the institute, of the total donation, $138,383, was provided by the cooperative of coffee producers of Abangares, Coopeldos R.L.
The donation will allow the purchase of new equipment for the coffee bean treatment process to be modernized, with minimal water consumption. Also, the heater that provides hot air in the process of drying the fruit will be improved, which will significantly reduce the use of firewood and electricity, the agency said.
The institute expects that these improvements in coffee production will generate between 35 and 50 million colones more in the next 15 years.
According to statistics of the institute, 1,000 people work in the coffee production in the area. That number increases up to 5,000 people in the time of harvest.
According to the Coffee Institute, for the 2019-2020 harvest, production will amount to an estimated 1.91 million quintals, exceeding by almost 12% what was recorded in the previous cycle, due in part to the renewal of some coffee plantations.
The institute predicts that coffee production will increase by 196,760 bags of 46 kilos of grain, going from 1,717,659 quintals reported in the 2018-2019 cycle to 1,914,419 projected for the 2019-2020 harvest.
