Employees of the National Coast Guard Service, approximately 600 people, will receive training on basic knowledge of boats. The courses will be managed by professionals from the National Learning Institute at the National Coast Guard Academy, located in the Quepos Beach station, Puntarenas Province. However, the announcement of the new training was made by the Ministry of Security in an activity that took place on Friday at the Marina Pez Vela facilities in Quepos Beach. Three specialized coastguards developed the courses. Another 14 specialists from the National Coast Guard Academy are expected to be included as trainers in the coming months. The coast guard service is vital for the protection of the maritime zone of Costa Rica, which is approximately 572,877 square miles. The territory includes the submarine mountain ranges of Coco Island, which has an approximate extension of 800 kilometers, according to a recent study of the Center for Research in Marine Sciences.  Among the main functions of the coast guard is to arrest drug trafficking suspects. One of the most recent anti-drug operation cases happened last week with the support of the United States Coast Guard.
