-Published: Monday, December 30, 2019- Arrests, drugs and
medical emergencies mark the San José
year-end festivities
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
According to the latest police and Red Cross reports, 20 people were arrested during the carnival and 74 people were treated for medical emergencies during the bull fights, carnival and horse parade, as part of the year-end festivities are known as Fiesta de Zapote According to Enrique Arguedas, deputy director of police, a large number of officers safeguard public order during the carnival that was held Friday and organized by the San José Municipality. However, as usual in these types of events, the police arrested 20 people for minor offenses or for having pending cases with justice. The arrests were: six for causing disturbances on public roads, three for robbery, three for having several pending accounts with the justice system, three referred to Migration for being in irregular immigration status, two for family violence and three for having a warrant for non payment of family maintenance, known as pension alimentaria in Spanish. Also, the police seized 27 doses of drugs, including 23 marijuana cigarettes, two cocaine tips and two crack doses. The Red Cross also reported that of the 74 people treated during the holidays 50 were men and 24 were women. According to the paramedic's report, one person was treated for injuries caused by a high altitude fall, 29 people needed to be treated for health problems, and 44 people were treated for minor injuries. Of the so-called improvised bullfighters, four had been taken to the emergency room of the Calderon Guardia Hospital after having received heavy impacts by a bull. According to the Red Cross, more than 100 paramedics were required to attend to any possible emergence during the day of the horse parade Thursday, as well as Carnival Friday. "We call on spectators and riders to take appropriate prevention measures by participating in a massive event," said Jim Batres of the Red Cross. The fair at the Zapote fairgrounds started Wednesday, Christmas Day. There are mechanical games, meals, typical dances, concerts and fireworks every night. Next to the fairground is the bull stadium. The National Tope, which is a parade of horses, old cars and old carts. According to the municipality, about 5,000 riders participated. The parade started at noon, and went through main San José avenues. The New Year's Eve Carnival on Friday, according to the municipality, at least 11 comparsas participated. These are groups of dancers representing communities and the provinces. Since Wednesday night the traffic police closed access to the roads of the route of the horse parade and carnival. But since Saturday all roads were open. The bullfights that are taking place in the Plaza de Toros in Zapote are known in Spanish as Toros a la Tica. In Costa Rica it is illegal to kill or injure bulls, so bullfights are very different from those that can be seen in Spain or México. One of the activities considered fun by Costa Ricans is when a bull is released inside the ring to chase dozens of so-called improvised bullfighters, know as toreros improvisados in Spanish. These are mostly men who have limited experience with bulls. Some would say that a bull is released into a mob. According to the organizers, this year almost 300 bulls are being used among different games and activities. One unusual game places a handful of men and sometimes a woman into a well-marked section. Then the bull is released. If a player moves out of the marked section to dodge a bull, he or she is out of the game. The last individual remaining in the marked area usually wins a money prize. Another event places men on a seesaw. As the bull approaches, a participant goes up in the air out of reach. But his companion on the device goes lower. Consequently, the bull becomes confused moving from one side to the other. Usually, the bull fails to gore either player. When a bull is successful, the Red Cross is standing by. Organizers have to be creative in providing new attractions and gimmicks with the bull because sometimes the events are twice a day. Although the joke is that someone needs to be inebriated to get in a ring with a fighting bull, the truth is that all of the participants are sober because they know they are risking their lives. Organizers said that more than 250 people will be improvised bullfighters in various events until Jan. 6. Each is supposed to buy a special insurance policy from the National insurance Institute. -------------------- Have you participated in the toros, carnival or hose parade in Costa Rica?
