According to specialists, Pulmonary Surfactant, so-called surface active agent, is a substance that is found in the alveoli of the lungs and that helps minimize alveolar surface tension. This surfactant is composed of proteins, neutral lipids, phospholipids and other substances. The function of the lungs depends largely on the amount of surfactant, as well as its quality since poor levels or certain defects in its composition can lead to considerable changes, such as hyaline membrane disease, which affects to premature newborn babies, making it difficult for them to breathe and putting their lives at risk. Social Security guarantees the availability of this medicine but from another manufacturer's brand. "This drug is essential in the treatment of infants with lung problems, so the institution as a contingent measure guaranteed the availability of the same active substance from another manufacturing laboratory," said Social Security in its statement.
