650,000-plus people will face drinking water shortages

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers estimated Monday that 652,000 people in the country will have shortages of drinking water during the dry season this year.

According to the institute, people or users who will be affected by the dry season will be approximately 2,700 in Guanacaste, located in Abangares and a sector of Nicoya.

It is also estimated 39,000 users will be affected in Tilarán and Cañas.

According to the Meteorological Institute, the dry/summer season there presents a considerable reduction in rainfall and a gradual increase in temperature throughout the country.

The dry season has a regular duration of six months and usually runs from December until April.

This dry season influences the water collection in the storage facilities of the Institute of Aqueducts, which causes shortages of drinking water.

Intending to provide more drinking water to users in Guanacaste, the institute announced that three distribution lines in Liberia, Nicoya, Cañas are under construction with the cost of $38.7 million.

According to the institute, the Liberia pipeline is the most advanced, with an expectation of it being inaugurated in February.

During 2019, the institute opened three lines in Guanacaste. The first was built in Santa Cruz with a cost of $14.2 million. The second was in Sardinal-El Coco-Ocotal with the cost of $3.2 million. The third was built in Trancas-Papagayo with a cost of $7.3 million.
