In the cantons of Siquirres and Guácimo, in Limon Province, more than 44,000 kg of garbage is collected by workers of the program called Socio-Environmental Technology Park, PATESA.

The Rural Development Institute, INDER, developed the program, which in addition to recycling garbage, provides courses on environmental education, garbage separation processes and reusable waste collection.

The program also supports the Environmental Technology Transfer Center, which provides places for organic compost production and nurseries.

According to Harys Regidor, president of the institute, this year $781,191 has been invested in financing the recycling program.

The funds were also used for financing 155 workshops and recycling campaigns, in which 3,500 people have participated. "The two municipalities also have 4 trucks that collect recyclable waste that carries out 16 weekly routes," Regidor said.

The recycling program added more garbage collection centers in schools where they’ll be paying in Ecoins for recyclable material. Ecoins are coupons that can be exchanged for prizes.

According to the mayor of the Siquirres Canton, Mangell McLean, the goal is to extend the recycling program to all 6 cantons in the Limón province.
