200 companies get relief funds

By the A.M. Costa  Rica staff

Two hundred small and medium-sized exporting companies or with the potential to export, will receive non-reimbursable funds by the governments Programa Alivio, or the relief program in English. Companies eligible for the relief must have had difficulties in their operations due to the national emergency due to covid-19.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Trade, this program is developed by Costa Rica's Export Promotion Agency, known as PROCOMER by its acronym in Spanish, the Public Institute of Learning and the Development Banking System.

The goal of this program is to mitigate the negative impacts of the pandemic on the national economy, the Ministry said in its statement.

The maximum amounts of non-reimbursable funds to be granted are determined according to the size of the company. Small companies may get $17,500 and medium companies may receive $29,800.

Of the total number of beneficiaries, 26% belong to the agricultural sector, 20% to the food sector, 26.5% to industry and 27.5% to services said the ministry.

These companies will also receive advice on business management and production inputs.

"We are very pleased to have been able to launch this project that aims to ensure the survival of 200 companies," said Dyalá Jiménez, Minister of Foreign Trade. "80% of exporters are made up of small and medium-sized companies and the export sector generates 30% of national employment, which is why we cannot allow this engine of development to die down."

According to the ministry, the selection process for these 200 companies was made through an open competition made available on the ProgramAalivio.com website. Judges reviewed applicants compliance with the requirements, and analysis of the situation of the companies.

The list of winning companies is available at Programaalivio.com site.
