| Citizen's
Action Party owes $181,000 to electoral services providers |
|
By AM Costa Rica staff
The Citizen Action Party owes $181,000 to advertising and a polling agencies for services provided during the electoral campaign. Víctor Morales, former campaign manager, said there was an error in the calculations of the funds that the party was going to charge for the sale of bonds of political debt. Such a miscalculation prevented the immediate payment promised to these providers. "We did not have the liquidity we expected. We had foreseen for the sale of bonds, so we had to delay payments to suppliers," Morales said. The president of the party Alfredo Chavarría, said that the debts will be paid in the next 22 days. "There may have been an error in the calculations. We have had a little delay, in part due to the changes in the party's authorities," Chavarria said. The party hired advertising services, while the polling firm provided the party with consultancies, focus group sessions as well as internal surveys, according to Morales. |

Apparently, the party did
not sell as many bonds as expected.
"We are
asking for some time. We have said to them
that we are going to pay once we solve the
credit procedures," he said.
The party has already reached a repayment schedule with one creditor. |

| Reventazón
hydroelectric
plant generates electricity again |
|
By A.M. Costa Rica staff
The Reventazón Hydroelectric Plant was re-incorporated into the National Electric System Friday after going out of operation last February due to a leak in the spillway, according to the National Electricity Institute. The reservoir filling program, which began on May 18, was completed on time, according to the institute. The minimum level of operation, 245 meters above sea level, was reached and allowed for the tests necessary for the plant to begin operations. The current generation of the $1.4 billion Reventazón comes from the unit of the ecological compensation plant while the four main generating units will be added progressively over the next seven days, the institute said. "With satisfaction we have reinserted the Reventazón Hydroelectric Plant into the national electric park. The plans are implemented to guarantee the supply of the country and to preserve the levels of renewable generation which have been successful. We hope that at the end of the following week, the five turbines will be feeding the plant," said Luis Pacheco, corporate director of the Institute. |

| Border areas will be more strictly monitored to fight human trafficking |
|
By A.M. Costa Rica
staff
The Ministry of Public Security will employ several preventive programs in the country's border areas to fight human trafficking and other crimes, according to a press statement. The ministry said there are new resources assigned for the delegations of Los Chiles, Upala, San Carlos, Talamanca, La Cruz, Sarapiqui, Corredores and Coto Brus. "The investment will prevent problems such as violence and crime in issues such as human trafficking, sexual exploitation, domestic violence and bullying," says the document. Deputy Minister Eduardo Solano said that the benefiting delegations belong to the areas with the lowest social development index, where they hope to continue strengthening the offices that serve migratory zones. Authorities delivered new vehicles, electronic equipment and furniture donated by the General Directorate of Migration to the areas in question. The security minister, Michael Soto, said that the country must understand that many citizens flee from neighboring countries due to different social crises. |

It is likely that security measures will be strengthened
at the Nicaraguan border due to the political crisis.
"Although it seems little, it's a lot. This will make the work easier since prevention is necessary in order to reduce crime rates in the medium term," said Soto. |

| Finance ministry warns about scammers using its name to steal data |
|
By
A.M.
Costa Rica staff
The Minister of Finance has issued a call to all citizens and residents to be on the alert for scammers and said that no representative of the ministry will ever request the personal data of taxpayers or ask for access to their computer equipment. The institution also said no one is authorized to make phone calls or visit companies or houses on its behalf. According to the document, some people have been using the name of the EXONET system as a pretext to enter facilities, arguing that they should review the installation of that system. The implementation of electronic invoices has also been used for possible scams. The General Directorate of Customs warned that scammers may also request money for allegedly auctioned goods even though anyone wishing to participate in an auction must deposit an advance payment by means of a certified check in favor agency that is in charge of the auction. Payment is never made in cash to officials or individuals. The Ministry says that anything related to the exoneration system, EXONET, is only coordinated before the Exemption Management Department of the General Directorate of Finance, in San José. |

| Jacó drug
traffickers sentenced to eight years in prison |
|
|
By A.M. Costa
Rica news
Sergio Antonio
Araya Aguilar has been
convicted of the crime of
international drug
trafficking and will spend
eight years and six months
in prison.
The sentence was handed down June 11 by the Criminal Court of Puntarenas, according to the Public Ministry. Last Dec. 19, brothers Jorge Bolívar Chaves and José Luis Palma González, Ecuadorians, accepted the charges and went through a special abbreviated procedure without a trial, and each received an eight-year prison sentence. Araya Aguilar, a Costa Rican national, was the only one who refused the abbreviated process and faced trial. Those sentenced individuals were detained Sept. 2, 2016, in the sector of Miradores de Jacó. Prior to arrest, they had been intercepted by the National Coast Guard Service when they were at sea throwing away packages found to contain 331 kilograms of cocaine. |
![]() The events that led
to the sentence took place in the
Pacific
off Jacó, in the province of Puntarenas. |
