Canada, the United States and Mexico
will host the 2026 World Cup

By A.M. Costa Rica staff

The United States, Canada and Mexico will host the soccer World Cup in 2026, according to the International Federation of Associated Soccer.

The three countries beat Morocco in a vote by the federation congress during a session held in Moscow.

Mexico will become the first country to host three World Cups. That country hosted the event in 1970, 1986 and now 2026.

The United 2026 candidacy of the three countries received 134 votes, while Morocco received 65.

The United 2026 presented a solid joint proposal emphasizing an adequate infrastructure, international soccer officials said.

Morocco lost the opportunity to organize a World Cup for the fifth time. Other attempts by Morocco failed in 1994, 1998, 2006 and 2010.

The potential of North America is a big one: There are 23 acceptable sports venues, three in Mexico, three in Canada and 17 in the United States. There could be up to 48 national teams.

The organization established that 60 games will be played in the United States, 10 in Mexico and 10 in Canada.

For decades, the United States seemed immune to soccer fever, the most popular sport in the world, but unable to compete with the American giants of basketball, baseball and football.

In 1994, during the World Cup in the United States more than 3.5 million soccer fans traveled through the country to fill the stadiums with an average of 68,991 spectators per game. In the process, a new program was created, Major League Soccer.

In its beginning, in 1996, the league had only 10 teams. Now it has 23, spread across the states and territories of the United States and Canada and three new franchises are expected for 2020.

In 2017, 22,133 media people went to the stadiums in the United States, making Major League Soccer the seventh world championship in terms of press attendance, according to historical data from the federation and the league.

United States will host 60 of 80 soccer matches in 2026.
However, the United States will not participate in the 2018 World Cup because the national team did not qualify during regional competition.

"The development of the national team and the creation of the MLS would not have taken place without the 1994 World Cup," Alan Rothenberg, president of the soccer league, said in 2014.

"This sport has become a professional organization well managed and financed in the United States," he added.

According to figures from the soccer federation, 24.4 million people play at various levels worldwide. A recent poll conducted by the Gallup Institute showed that 7 percent of Americans consider soccer their favorite sport. The other favorites are football (37 percent), basketball (11 percent) and baseball (9 percent) but soccer growth has been 3 percent in four years.

In the 18 to 34 age group, 11 percent prefer soccer and 6 percent prefer baseball, Gallup said.

On television, the NBC channel, available in most households, has live broadcasts of the English Premier League and, on Pay TV, German, French and Spanish championships are available.

"We have the facilities, we have the market and we have support," Don Garberen, league leader, said in an interview with the AFP news agency last year.

Russian authorities detain four Costa Ricans
for failing to register their stay on Airbnb

By A.M. Costa Rica staff

Sebastián Castro, Oliver Nowalski, Esteban Alfaro and Andrés Bronnimann, were detained by Russian police Wednesday for more than three hours and had to pay a fine to be released.

All foreigners visiting Russia must register their place of lodging with the local police no later than three days after entering the country or they could be detained to clarify their immigration status.

"All the people who come to a hotel are automatically registered, because the hotel registers them, there is no problem there. But during the World Cup many are arriving at apartments, friends' houses and other places whose owners must inform the police about the people they are hosting," said David Angulo, Costa Rican consul in Russia to the Costa Rican press.

The group entered Russia through the border with Latvia the previous weekend.

On Wednesday, police visited them in their apartment and took them by car to a police station.

"The police tell us that Airbnb did not register and that we had to have requested it when we arrived," Esteban Alfaro told local newspaper.

CostaRican061418.jpg

The Costa Rican group paid a fine of $85.

They said they tried to talk to the owner of the apartment, who also has the responsibility of registering his guests, but he was not available.

Ministry arrests a person for serious threats
against the General Prosecutor's Office

By A.M. Costa Rica staff

The Public Ministry confirmed the arrest of a person after serious threats were made against the Attorney General of the Republic, Emilia Navas.

The detained person remains in preventive detention.

The Prosecutor's Office informed the public that there is an investigation into a series of threats against Navas, which were classified as serious.

The identity of the person was not revealed.

The Public Ministry said in a statement that the threats occurred several times.

"The individual suspected of committing the crime was identified and is in preventive detention while the investigation progresses. For security reasons, we will not give more details of the case," the document says.

Navas took control of the Public Ministry in the midst of a corruption scandal involving the three branches of government which led to raids on the Legislative Assembly, the Judiciary, the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Costa Rica.

Navas has said that it is a complex case because of the magnitude of the damage caused to the public and private institutions involved and because of the the number of suspects.

President Alvarado promoted investment
opportunities in Costa Rica

By AM Costa Rica staff

President Carlos Alvarado has promoted the investment opportunities offered by Costa Rica with representatives of high-tech companies and companies involved in life sciences, finance, automotive, and the food and service industries.

Alvarado's presentation took place in Washington, D.C., Tuesday morning. He was a special guest at an activity organized by the Council of the Americas, an organization that brings together hundreds of important companies in the United States.

The president focused his talk on the economic prospects of the country and the investment opportunities offered by Costa Rica, and then he exchanged opinions with investors.

Alvarado recalled his two years of experience as Latin America marketing director for the transnational, Procter & Gamble, and how that experience contributes to his having a better understanding of the private sector, the business climate and the requirements for the formation of human talent.

The president took the opportunity to explain the measures that the Executive Branch is promoting to improve public finances and mentioned his determination to join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Costa Rica aspires to become the 38th member of the international organization.

Innovation and entrepreneurship expo
in the Pacific coast this weekend

By A.M. Costa Rica staff

More than 200 micro, small- and medium-sized companies will participate in the Expo Pymes Innova 2018, organized by the students of the business management major at the Pacific campus of the University of Costa Rica.

The event will take place in the José Martí de Orotina Park Saturday and Sunday.

A diversity of products related to food, books, textiles, commerce, services, crafts, ecology and technology are expected, organizers said.

The objective is to encourage the inhabitants of the area to know more about entrepreneurship and innovation to boost the economic and social development, a release said.

This activity is an opportunity for small and medium entrepreneurs in the central Pacific area to present their work, according to Kevin Campos, a student of the business management major at the Pacific headquarters of the university.

"The SME's Expo is vital because it gives us the opportunity to learn by doing, in addition to using our knowledge to start managing a project of high importance. In addition, students in the first and fourth year of the program will show their entrepreneurial projects," said Campos.

Government may negotiate breaks
to watch national soccer team's matches
Rectangulo110117.jpg
By A.M. Costa Rica staff

The Executive Branch has allowed public employees to watch the matches of the national soccer team during the first phase of the 2018 World Cup without requiring a leave of absence.

The deal implies all working hours will be met.

The Costa Rica National Soccer Team will play at 6 a.m. Sunday, against Serbia, on Friday against Brazil, and at noon on Wednesday against Switzerland.

For games starting at 6 a.m. the heads of each office or department will be responsible for adapting work schedules, the central government said.

In the game against Switzerland, scheduled at noon, permission has been given employees to watch or listen to the match during or after lunch in an area determined by the management of each institution.

In the case of customer service roles, watching the games will be allowed while the workers follow their assignments and behave properly, the government said.

These measures must ensure and guarantee that essential public services such as surveillance, public safety, health, emergencies, operation of national ports and airports, prison services, and other services are maintained, the government said.

Puerto Viejo residents discussed
environmental laws with judicial expert

By A.M. Costa Rica staff

Residents in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca and surrounding areas took part in a conversation on environmental law.

The gathering last week was led by José Pablo González, deputy assistant in agricultural and environmental law, who helped the attendees understand the laws and properly phrase their question in regard to the subject.

Activity was coordinated by a part of the Deputy Prosecutor's Office of Probity, Transparency and Anti-corruption.

González started the activity by explaining the characteristics of environmental law and the concepts surrounding the most frequent crimes in this area, according to a press release.

At a later time, he placed further emphasis on laws, sanctions, protected areas, the intervention of institutions related to environmental protection, recycling and environmental damage.

Attendees took the opportunity to provide their feedback and request support from the Public Prosecutor's Office in relation to these topics.

Among the issues addressed, the conversation involved the building permits granted by the Municipality of Talamanca within the maritime zones during the moratorium period, since it is forbidden to build in public areas, wetlands and wetlands, the release said.

PuertoViejo061418.jpg
A.M. Costa Rica wire services photo
The meeting was held at the Liberty Hall Cultural Center
in Puerto Viejo.

"In Costa Rica you cannot claim ignorance of the law. We denounce, even if they have built and already cut the trees, because nature has an impressive capacity to regenerate itself and ignorance and greed cannot prevail. Our struggle is not for us, it is for our children and their children," said González, according to the release.

During the meeting, the community also had the opportunity to meet the new staff that took office last May in the Prosecutor's Office in Bribri, including Marlon Poyser, coordinating prosecutor, and the auxiliary public prosecutor Guillermo Cordero.

National Symphonic Choir and Orchestra will come
together at the Basilica of Santo Domingo de Heredia

By A.M. Costa Rica staff

Featuring more than 160 artists on stage, the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica and the National Symphonic Choir, will perform "Requiem" by the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi under the direction of John Nelson.

Considered one of Verdi's masterpieces, "Requiem" or the "Requiem Mass" as it is also known, was premiered in 1874 for choir, four solo voices and orchestra.

The presentations will be free and will be offered tonight and Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Basilica of Santo Domingo de Heredia.

This presentation will feature the participation of Costa Rican soprano Gloriela Villalobos, as well as American singers Raehann Bryce-Davis, mezzo-soprano, Timothy Bentch, tenor, and Adam Lau, bass, all as guest soloists.

The last time these groups presented Verdi's "Requiem" in the country was in November 2013 in the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Theater of Costa Rica.

La Cangreja sector closed due to landslides

By A.M. Costa Rica staff

The National Road Council closed the area known locally as La Cangreja to vehicle traffic, due to heavy collapse caused by rain.

Workers were cleaning the rubble at kilometer 35 of the southern Inter-American highway, the La Cangreja sector, to reopen the area, which has been closed since Tuesday night.

According to the Council, there was a new collapse Wednesday morning.

Heavy machinery, including a bulldozer, backhoe and trucks, are on the site to clear the road.

Authorities are calling on drivers of light vehicles to travel through the Los Santos area and exit at Empalme.

The Costanera Sur highway is also an alternative.
