|
By AM Costa Rica staff
President Carlos Alvarado has promoted the investment opportunities offered by Costa Rica with representatives of high-tech companies and companies involved in life sciences, finance, automotive, and the food and service industries. Alvarado's presentation took place in Washington, D.C., Tuesday morning. He was a special guest at an activity organized by the Council of the Americas, an organization that brings together hundreds of important companies in the United States. The president focused his talk on the economic prospects of the country and the investment opportunities offered by Costa Rica, and then he exchanged opinions with investors. Alvarado recalled his two years of experience as Latin America marketing director for the transnational, Procter & Gamble, and how that experience contributes to his having a better understanding of the private sector, the business climate and the requirements for the formation of human talent. The president took the opportunity to explain the measures that the Executive Branch is promoting to improve public finances and mentioned his determination to join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Costa Rica aspires to become the 38th member of the international organization. |

| Government may negotiate breaks to watch national soccer team's matches |
|
By A.M. Costa Rica
staff
The Executive Branch has allowed public employees to watch the matches of the national soccer team during the first phase of the 2018 World Cup without requiring a leave of absence. The deal implies all working hours will be met. The Costa Rica National Soccer Team will play at 6 a.m. Sunday, against Serbia, on Friday against Brazil, and at noon on Wednesday against Switzerland. For games starting at 6 a.m. the heads of each office or department will be responsible for adapting work schedules, the central government said. In the game against Switzerland, scheduled at noon, permission has been given employees to watch or listen to the match during or after lunch in an area determined by the management of each institution. In the case of customer service roles, watching the games will be allowed while the workers follow their assignments and behave properly, the government said. These measures must ensure and guarantee that essential public services such as surveillance, public safety, health, emergencies, operation of national ports and airports, prison services, and other services are maintained, the government said. |

Public employees will have the chance to watch the games as long as they do not interrupt the services they normally provide. |

| Puerto Viejo residents discussed environmental laws with judicial expert |
|
By
A.M.
Costa Rica staff
Residents in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca and surrounding areas took part in a conversation on environmental law. The gathering last week was led by José Pablo González, deputy assistant in agricultural and environmental law, who helped the attendees understand the laws and properly phrase their question in regard to the subject. Activity was coordinated by a part of the Deputy Prosecutor's Office of Probity, Transparency and Anti-corruption. González started the activity by explaining the characteristics of environmental law and the concepts surrounding the most frequent crimes in this area, according to a press release. At a later time, he placed further emphasis on laws, sanctions, protected areas, the intervention of institutions related to environmental protection, recycling and environmental damage. Attendees took the opportunity to provide their feedback and request support from the Public Prosecutor's Office in relation to these topics. Among the issues addressed, the conversation involved the building permits granted by the Municipality of Talamanca within the maritime zones during the moratorium period, since it is forbidden to build in public areas, wetlands and wetlands, the release said. |

The meeting was held at the
Liberty Hall Cultural Center
in Puerto Viejo. "In Costa
Rica you cannot claim ignorance of the law. We
denounce, even if they have built and already
cut the trees, because nature has an
impressive capacity to regenerate itself and
ignorance and greed cannot prevail. Our
struggle is not for us, it is for our children
and their children," said González, according
to the release.
During the meeting, the community also had the opportunity to meet the new staff that took office last May in the Prosecutor's Office in Bribri, including Marlon Poyser, coordinating prosecutor, and the auxiliary public prosecutor Guillermo Cordero. |

| La Cangreja sector
closed due to landslides |
|
|
By A.M. Costa
Rica staff
The National Road Council closed the area known locally as La Cangreja to vehicle traffic, due to heavy collapse caused by rain. Workers were cleaning the rubble at kilometer 35 of the southern Inter-American highway, the La Cangreja sector, to reopen the area, which has been closed since Tuesday night. According to the Council, there was a new collapse Wednesday morning. Heavy machinery, including a bulldozer, backhoe and trucks, are on the site to clear the road. Authorities are calling on drivers of light vehicles to travel through the Los Santos area and exit at Empalme. The Costanera Sur highway is also an alternative. |
