$650,000-plus scholarship will be shared among 132 athletes

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The government announced on Monday, the budget of $654,441 as part of the scholarship to be distributed among 132 athletes of 24 disciplines during this year.

They are "a live model of effort and discipline, which represents a true national pride," said President Carlos Alvarado during the ceremony of awarding scholarships at the National Stadium.

According to the Government, recently there have been more international awards to women than for men, such as the case of Brissa Hennessy, Noelia Vargas and the women soccer team.

In January, Costa Rican surfer Hennessy won the Women Qualifying Series 5,000 Corona Open, WQS championship, which was held in Riyue Bay, Hainan Island, China. This is the first time in the history of surfing in Costa Rica that a woman won in this competition. Hennessy already has obtained a place for Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

In Sep. 2019, the athlete Andrea Vargas, won third place in the women's 100m hurdles, in the Zagreb World Challenge, which took place in Croatia. In August 2019, at the Pan American Games, Vargas won one gold medal in the category of running Women's 100m hurdles.

In August 2019, the women's soccer team won a bronze medal at the 2019 Pan American Games, the multi-sport event governed by the Panam Sports Organization was held in Peru.

The 132 scholarships, of which 62 women and 70 men, were elected by the Permanent Commission of National Teams among 283 athletes from 27 disciplines nominated by nationally represented associations and federations.

Subsequently, the names were ratified by the National Sports and Recreation Council.

The scholarship is awarded to athletes according to their international participation in the competitive period of 2019, to maintain or improve their sports performance throughout their sports preparation process.

Scholarships will be given via bank transfer every month throughout the year.

In addition to the cash, athletes will have free benefits as general medicine, physical therapy, nutrition, psychology, as well as advice from the National Anti-Doping Commission.

By discipline, women's football is the one with the most scholarships this year, followed by athletes of water sports, fencing, bowling, cycling, taekwondo, racquetball, boxing, judo, surfing, among others.
