first recycled plastic blocks factory in the
country
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The Municipality of Mora announced Friday the construction of the first factory to recycle plastic blocks. Mora is a canton west of the central canton of San José in the province of the same name with an approximately population of 29,290. Ciudad Colón is the principal city. According to the municipality, the Institute for Rural Development will contribute about $257,674 to pay for previous studies on the construction of the factory. Starting up the factory requires an investment of $1.3 million, which is expected to have a public-private partnership, said an announcement. The factory will be built on a 2.5-hectares in the Piedras Negras district that belongs to the municipality. "This technology has been successfully developed by countries like Colombia and that its realization will have a positive impact, not only on the issue of environmental but also on the generation of employment in a district like Piedras Negras," said the municipality in its statement The blocks will be made of waste material of polypropylene that is used in food packaging, laboratory equipment and automotive components. Also, recycled polyethylene material used in plastic bottles and disposable plastic containers will be used, said the municipality, According to the municipality a house of 42 square meters can be built in a week with a team of four using the blocks. The houses will be, pest-free and 100% capable of being disassembles with one or two levels. According to data provided by the Ministry of Health, the country produces every day approximately 564 tons of plastic, of which only 14 tons are recycled. The rest go to landfills or sewers, rivers and seas, it said.
