Resident foreigners can now renew their residence card, known as DIMEX, at any of the 26 Correos de Costa Rica post offices in the country.

Correos, the government mail service company, also enabled the DIMEX home delivery option.

The request for DIMEX renewal appointments must be made by calling the 4-digit line 1311. The person must indicate which is the most convenient post office to go to in person to carry out this procedure.

On the date, the person must bring all the required documents such as:

In the case of permanent DIMEX renewal, the requirements are:

  • Residency certificate.
  • Valid passport.
  • Social Security number.
  • Pay a $123 fee (or $98 for minors or adults over 65 years old with disability).
  • Pay a $14 fee at the post office as a fee for the DIMEX renewal appointment.

In the case of DIMEX renewal for the husband or wife, the requirements are:

  • Certificate of residence.
  • Valid passport.
  • Social Security number
  • Payment for document renewal of $98.
  • Marriage certificate with no more than 2 months of being issued.
  • Pay a $14 fee at the post office as a fee for the DIMEX renewal appointment.

The new DIMEX should be collected at the same post office where the procedure was requested.

Correos also offers the option of DIMEX home delivery. In this case, the ID will be delivered one month after it was issued.

In addition to the DIMEX renewal, Correos also processes the renewal of passports for nationals and the renewal of the license to use and carry weapons.
