The Costa Rican Women’s National Soccer Team kicked things off in Group C as the second Concacaf national team to make their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
In their debut on Friday night, the Ticas fell 3-0 to Spain Team at the Wellington Regional Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand.
According to the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf), the Spanish attack got going early and their first goal arrived as their own goal in minute 21 of the game.
The Costa Rica defender player position Valeria del Campo was supporting her line when a cross from the left hit her leg and deflected into the Costa Rica net, giving Spain the 1-0 lead.
It quickly became 2-0 two minutes later in the 23 minutes time, when Spain midfielder player position Aitana Bonmati latched onto a ball and fired in a left-footed shot for the second goal for Spain.
The Costa Rica goalkeeper Daniela Solera made a brilliant stop in minute 26 to deny Spain a third goal, but couldn’t save the next attempt from the forwarder player position Esther Gonzalez just a minute later in the 27 minutes of the game, with a redirect into a goal after a header had struck the crossbar.
The
Spanish pressure kept coming and the
European side looked set to score a
fourth in the 33 minutes when Costa
Rica’s Fabiola Villalobos committed
a foul in the area and the referee
signaled for a penalty. Spain
forwarder Jennifer Hermoso stepped
up to take it, but Solera, a hero
once again, denied the shot. Costa
Rica tried to pull a goal back and
had looked through Melissa Herrera
in the 40 minute and Katherine
Alvarado in the 60 minute, but were
turned away by the Spanish defense. The 3-0
scoreline held until the final
whistle. The
next test for Costa Rica will be on
Wednesday, July 26, against the 2011
Champions Japan at the Forsyth Barr
Stadium in Dunedin, New Zealand. The
FIFA Women's World Cup Qualifiers
will be televised live and on-demand
with Paramount+. Live
updates for the game will be
published on the Costa Rica Soccer
Football Federation's website. Recently,
the Costa Rica Men's Soccer Team
was eliminated from the 2023 Gold
Cup following the results of the
2-0 Mexico victory over the Ticos. The
Gold Cup, organized by Concacaf was
the main association football
competition of the men's national
football teams of North America,
Central America and the Caribbean.
