Saturday, May 1 marks International Workers' Day, knows as May Day, under the shadow of the covid-19 pandemic.

According to the International Labour Organization, a United Nations agency, which works towards setting international labor standards, the pandemic has devastated the world of work, destroying jobs, enterprises and livelihoods, throwing millions into poverty and global development into reverse, they said on its statement. "And like most crises, it has hit the weakest and the most vulnerable, the hardest, making an unequal world even more unequal, " they added
However, the upcoming celebration of May Day in Costa Rica is a holiday moved to Monday. The long weekend for many Ticos is a great chance to escape to the beaches and countryside.

Due to the increase in covid-19 infections in Costa Rica, and the risk of saturation of the Intensive Care Unit beds for critical patients, the health authorities called on the tourism sector and citizens to apply sanitary measures to avoid spread of the disease.

Authorities  reemphasized the well know basic guidelines that could help protect each other from contracting and transmitting covid-19, such as:
 • Frequently washing your hands.
 • Avoid touching your face.
 • Stop shaking hands and hugging people.
 • Don’t share personal items.
 • Wear a facemask to cover your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze.
 • Clean and disinfect surfaces.
 • Keeping 6 feet distance for social distancing.
 • Gathering with your social bubble.
 • Avoid eating or drinking in public places.
 • If you are sick, stay at home.
The holiday also marks the day Congress starts its new term and lawmakers chose a new directory, sort of their internal government.

The deputies will elect the new president of the legislature. The chosen individual will hold the position of leader of the Legislative Assembly for a term of one year.
The session will be held at 9 a.m., to take the oath to all deputies and will be followed by the election of the new president of Congress.

The Legislative Assembly is composed of 57 deputies who are elected by direct, universal, popular vote on a closed party-list proportional representation basis by provinces for four-year terms.

May Day honors the hard work of people across the world and celebrates their achievements. It has its origins in 1889,  when socialist groups and trade unions in the U.S. designated May 1 as a day for workers.

This was in remembrance of the Haymarket Riots in Chicago in 1886 when a worker's protest rally turned violent after someone threw a bomb at the police.

However, this holiday has its origins in the United States but there and in Canada, the holiday is celebrated on the first Monday in September, honoring workers and their contribution to society.

In Costa Rica, the U.S. Embassy, including the Consular Section, will be closed on Monday, May 3, to commemorate Labor Day.
