By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Women prisoners at the Vilma
Curling Center, known as the women's prison,
will receive courses taught by instructors
from the National Institute of Learning to
improve their chances of finding a job when
they are released from prison.
---------------------The plan is part of the ministry's Building Opportunities program, which aims to help women in prison develop skills to increase the chances of social reintegration. The plan is to install a study center financed with the prison's budget where they will develop the same courses that the institute regularly develops. The goal is to train more than 100 women in prison per year. This study center is the result of good reviews of the courses by women in prison. Last year 11 courses were provided in different areas such as sewing, mechanics, among others. The training for women in jail started in May 2020, when a sewing workshop was also developed in the prison to provide suits and supplies for hospitals. According to the Ministry of Justice, which is in charge of the administration of prisons in Costa Rica, the construction and equipment of the workshop, a computer lab, plus the training of women cost $880,777 from the ministry budget. Social Security provided the fabrics and the institute donated sewing machines for the women in the factory to make the mandated hospital clothes. Should the ministry develop more
programs for women prisoners to work? We
