On Tuesday, a protected witness, during a trial in a New York court, gave testimony claiming that he saw the President of Honduras Juan Orlando Hernández meet with a drug trafficking suspect surnamed Fuentes, according to a report from La Prensa Honduras Journal.
It was revealed on the seventh day of the trial against Fuentes, that the alleged Honduran drug trafficker paid politicians in exchange for his safety in Honduras.
The witness is an accountant, who assured that he witnessed meetings between the president of Honduras and Fuentes, according to the report.
The alleged meetings occurred when Hernández was running his presidential campaign in 2013. These were held in the facilities of a company allegedly used by drug traffickers as money laundering activity.
According to the report, the witness said that Hernández visited that company on several occasions, arriving by helicopter, to receive checks for approximately $10,000. The money was to support the Hernandez campaign in 2013 when he was a member of the National Congress.
President Hernández has yet to comment on the statements made by the protected witness in the New York court. On previous occasions Hernández has said that damning testimonies by drug traffickers are a revenge for their actions against the drug cartels in Honduras, La Prensa said in its report.
Currently, the National Electoral Council of Honduras is leading the primary elections to choose the candidates for the presidential elections that will be held in November 2021.
