United Airlines confirms commercial
flights to Costa Rica

United Airlines confirmed the reopening of commercial flights from the states of New Jersey, Houston and Chicago to Costa Rica.

According to the information published by the airline, the first flight number UA 511, in a Boeing 737, was scheduled to depart on Wednesday from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey, with a stopover at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), to continue to Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela Province.

According to the airline, this is the first flight scheduled to arrive in the country today in the morning. This would be the first commercial flight with American tourists since the airport reopened on Aug. 1.

The second flight, UA 1872 in a Boeing 737, is scheduled to leave on Wednesdays from O'Hare International Airport (ORD) in Chicago, IL, making a stopover at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), and then arriving at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO).

The third flight, UA 2448 in a Boeing 767, is scheduled for Thursdays to depart from the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), nonstop to Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO).

A fourth flight, UA 284 in a Boeing 737, is scheduled to depart on Wednesdays from Denver International Airport in Colorado (DEN), making a stopover at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), and then arriving at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO ).

The airline also has flight options for Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

In addition, the airline will restart flights to Guanacaste on Saturdays from New Jersey State to Liberia. The scheduled flight, UA 1442 in a Boeing 737, from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey is nonstop to Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia (LIR).

United has also scheduled more flights from Newark to Liberia for September 12 and 13.

However, depending on the market for commercial flights to Costa Rica, the airlines may modify the scheduled flights. People interested in traveling to Costa Rica from the United States can find further information on the United Airlines website.

According to the Aeris Holding Costa Rica, the company in charge of managing the international airport in Alajuela, in its report of the international airlines that have announced the reopening of flights are as follows:

• Iberia Airlines resumed operations on August 3 from Madrid.

• Lufthansa resumed operations on August 5 from Frankfurt.

• Avianca resumed operations on September 2, to and from El Salvador.

• United Airlines resumed operations today, September 3. And they’re offering repatriation flights to and from Houston.

• West Jet offers a repatriation flight to Canada on September 4.

• Copa Airlines will continue to schedule rescue flights to Panama for September 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25.

• Air Canada will resume operations beginning October 3, to and from Toronto.

• Air France will resume operations on October 14, to and from Paris.

• Edelweiss Air will resume operations on October 15 to Zurich.

• British Airways will resume operations on October 27.

• Southwest Airlines will resume operations in 2021.

According to Aeris, the updates of commercial flights to and from the country will depend on the information provided by each airline. The Juan Santamaría International Airport website will be updating information when more information is provided.

Since August 1, Costa Rica has maintained open-air borders with countries of the European Union (Schengen zone), United Kingdom, Japan; South Korea; Thailand, Singapore, China, Oceania, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Uruguay, and certain states from the United States.

The 26 Schengen countries are: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia , Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

In the case of the United States, only people living in 12 of the 50 states are allowed to enter the country beginning on the following dates:

• Since September 1, residents of Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Virginia and Washington D.C. are able to travel into Costa Rica.

• As of September 15, residents of Colorado, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania will be able to enter.

All foreign-born people who enter the country by air with a tourist visa must meet the following requirements:

• Fill out the electronic epidemiological online Health Pass form.

• RT-PCR diagnostic test with a negative result; the sample must have been taken within 72 hours of travel to Costa Rica.

• Passengers coming from the U.S.A. must show through their driver’s license or state identification (State ID) that they live in one of the 12 authorized states. This requirement excludes children traveling with their families.

• Traveler's Medical Insurance can be purchased in their country of origin or Costa Rica through the Government Insurance Institute or approved private insurance companies located in Costa Rica.

According to the government, the list of countries or states that are allowed to enter tourism is constantly updated, so it is expected that in the coming days there will be a new region authorized to reopen commercial flights in the country.
