Ukrainians evacuate Ticos from Wuhan

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday evacuation of two Costa Ricans from the City of Wuhan in China took place with the help of the Government of Ukraine.

According to the ministry, the Ukrainian government confirmed that the two individuals had already left Wuhan and are were about to arrive in The Ukraine. After arriving, the Costa Ricans must remain in quarantine before a trip to Costa Rica is authorized.

“It has been a complex, challenging process, in which we have put our best efforts to have a quick return of the two people to national land and to give their families peace of mind,” said  Rodolfo Solano Quirós, the minister.

The two Costa Ricans, who have not yet been named, must complete the process established for cases of repatriation, the ministry said.

"As from the beginning, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has pointed out, to protect people's privacy, they cannot publish their identity," the ministry said in its statement.

According to the statistics provided by the ministry, since 2019 there have been 20 cases of repatriation, which have lasted about 22 days on average, since leaving the country where they were located until arriving in Costa Rica.

According to  the consulate in China, 388 Costa Ricans live there. None has been affected by the coronavirus.

The government of Costa Rica issued its thanks to the government of The Ukraine for the solidarity expressed to the Costa Rican people through the evacuation and humanitarian assistance required for these two Costa Rican people.

Also, the authorities confirmed the shipment of medical supplies, disposable gloves, soap, towels and 1,000 masks for the use of Costa Ricans living in China.

The Ministry of Health also is in the process of sending to China a donation of medical supplies, which include gloves and 200,000 masks.



According to the most current information from World Health Organization Wednesday night, 75,669 coronavirus cases have been reported around the world, and 2,122 patients died.

 In China, 74,545 cases were confirmed, and 2,114 patients died. The mayor number of cases confirmed outside of China are:

- In the Diamond Princess cruise liner docked in Japan, 621, no deaths registered.

- Active cases in Japan, 84, one patient died.

-  In Hong Kong, 65, two patients died.

- In Taiwan   23 cases, one patient died.

- In France 12 cases, one patient died.

- In The Philippines three  cases, one patient died.

- In Iran  two cases, both patients died.

In other countries, with cases registered with no patients dead are: Singapore, 84; South Korea,  58; Thailand, 35; Malaysia, 22; Germany  and  Vietnam, 16 each, Australia and the U.S., 15 cases each; Macao, 10, U.K. and U.A.E.,  9 each; Canada,  8,  India and Italy three cases each; Russia and Spain, two cases each, and one case confirmed in Belgium, Cambodia, Egypt, Finland, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Sweden.
