By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Beginning today through Tuesday, Nov. 9, applications open for the diversity visa lottery program, known as the visa lottery, organized by the U.S. State Department. According to the embassy, those interested in applying must enter the Electronic Diversity Visa Program official site, provided by the Bureau of Consular Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, to carry out the process electronically and personally. This is the only official electronic address available for registration. The online service is free and offered by the U.S. State Department. The application does not require intermediaries for enrollment in the program. The embassy warns about third parties that take advantage of the visa lottery to scam people. According to authorities, applicants will often receive emails from people who offer help if the applicant will give them information on bank accounts or other personal data, “The visa lottery must ensure that they entered the only official site to avoid being victims of fraud." The embassy clarified that it has no direct relationship with this process, so those interested must enter the indicated website to obtain detailed information. Before completing the registration, applicants should make sure to read the DV-2023 Entry Instructions carefully. Applicants may be disqualified for not completing the entry form correctly or by submitting more than one entry. The application requires applicants for completion of secondary education or two years of work experience in the last five years in a profession that requires at least two years of training or experience. This lottery grants 50,000 permanent residence visas to people from countries with low levels of emigration to the United States, including Costa Rica. More information can be requested by calling the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica, 2519-2000. But, due to observance of Columbus Day, the embassy and Consular Section will be closed today. The offices will reopen on Tuesday, Oct. 12, with normal hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ------------ What have you heard about Ticos looking to get a visa to travel to the U.S.?
