A Guatemalan citizen, surnamed Barrera-Salguero, 46, was sentenced to 17.5 years in prison for his role as a transportation manager in a large-scale Guatemalan Drug Trafficking Organization (DTO). According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office Eastern District of Virginia, the court documents, between 2015 and 2016, Barrera conspired to distribute over 1,000 kilograms of cocaine. Operating throughout Central America, Barrera orchestrated the movement of 3,586 kilograms of cocaine from Costa Rica to Guatemala. In June 2016, Barrera coordinated the transportation of 381 kilograms of cocaine from Costa Rica to Guatemala City, Guatemala. Once the cocaine arrived in Guatemala, the 381 kilograms of cocaine were seized by Guatemalan law enforcement authorities during a traffic stop in the vicinity of Barrera’s commercial trucking business. On July 1, 2020, a man surnamed Fuentes-Amaya, a co-defendant of Barrera, was sentenced to 192 months for his role in the cocaine trafficking conspiracy on behalf of the DTO. Barrera was extradited to the United States on February 4, 2021, serving as a transportation manager for the DTO. In this leadership role, Barrera organized cocaine transportation networks, directed the movement of cocaine loads, and directed the movement of bulk cash. This prosecution is part of the Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force Operation Go Explorers, OCDETF. The OCDETF identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level drug traffickers, money launderers, gangs, and transnational criminal organizations that threaten the United States by using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach that leverages the strengths of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies against criminal networks. ------------------------ What should the U.S. authorities do to stop the drug war?
