Pennsylvania-based healthcare company Viatris announced the opening of its operations in the country with an initial investment of $1.4 million.
According to the firm, which was created in 2020 after the merger of the companies Mylan and Upjohn, the new branch will carry out commercial operations, such as the import and distribution of medicines in the region.
"We are standard-bearers of public health; and Costa Rica, a country with a global and supportive health system, such as the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social, and with first-level public health indexes, is the natural choice for a company like Viatris," said Patrick Doyle, Viatris representative regarding the choice of Costa Rica as headquarters in the region. "As standard bearers of accessible health, collaboration and leadership, we found in your country a like-minded ally."
Since its creation, Viatris is one of the sixth-largest pharmaceutical companies in the world with more than 45,000 employees and a presence in 165 countries.
The brand has more than 1,400 approved drugs ranging from therapeutic areas for both infectious and non-infectious diseases and includes globally iconic brands, generic and branded medicines, a growing range of biosimilar medicines and a wide variety of OTC consumer products. In addition to more than 200 medicines on the World Health Organization, WHO, Essential Medicines List.
Corporate services companies show steady growth. In the third quarter of 2020, the country exported $171 million more than the same period in 2019, which represents an increase of 6% in exports in this sector, the Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency, CINDE, said in its statement.

Viatris is the fourth U.S. company, in less than one month, announcing an investment in its operations in Costa Rica.
On Feb. 25, Amazon Web Services, AWS, a company of Amazon, announced the opening of its new office in San José Province, to support the rapid adoption of cloud computing within Costa Rica.
Amazon Web Services are such as storage, databases, networking, analytics, robotics, machine and artificial intelligence, AI, learning, Internet of Things, IoT, mobile, security, among 24 facilities worldwide.
Local Amazon employees will work to support organizations of all sizes, from startups to some of the oldest and most established companies in the country, including those in the public sector, as more Costa Rican companies transition to the AWS cloud.
As part of this expansion, the company plans to hire professionals in sales, marketing, and technical engineering roles, account executives, solution architects, partner managers, support personnel, and other functions, so that customers can engage directly with AWS, in their local environment, in their native language. In the same week, the California-based Helm360, a technology and data analytics company, announced the opening of a branch in Pérez Zeledón Canton, southern zone of San José Province.
The company, which has invested $2 million in its new support center, is expected to be complete by the end of the year. With this launch, the company will provide better service to its North American clients as well as expand its global presence.
Currently, the company operates in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and India.
From this new location, Helm360 will provide a variety of services, including software development, data analytics and visualization, managed services, quality control, staff recruitment, human resource coordination, digital marketing, legal and accounting services.

The Utah-based Biomerics expanded with a new facility in the country. The mid-market medical device contract manufacturer, announced its greenfield plan in the La Zeta Free Trade Zone in Cartago Province.
The new plant is adjacent to Biomerics current operations and includes extrusion, injection molding, micro metal processing, and cleanroom assembly process.
The new facility construction totaling 110,000 square feet will reflect the company's full-service business model and will include engineering labs, quality inspection labs, controlled environment manufacturing, office space, class 7 clean rooms, packaging, and warehouse facilities.
Currently, the firm employs 175 people at its 50,000 square-foot facility focused on extrusion, laser processing, high volume assembly, and packaging.
The expansion is in support of active transfer programs with strategic customers and is expected to double its number of employees over the next three years.
Construction is expected to be completed by Q4 2021 and will be celebrated with an open house, the company said in its statement. People interested in a job should visit the company careers site.
Although new businesses are creating jobs in Costa Rica, unemployment is one of the most critical issues. According to the Employment Survey, from November 2020 to January 2021, the unemployment rate was 19.1% meaning the unemployed population reached more than 468,000 people.
