The United States Department of Agriculture, USDA, also known as the Agriculture Department, reviewed the request submitted by the Ministry of Agriculture and excluded Costa Rica from the list of countries with the presence of a fungus on bananas known as FTR4.

The FTR4 fungus, known as Fusarium Tropical Race 4 (Fusarium oxysporum f. Sp. Cubense ) is a soil-borne fungus found in bananas, also known as Panama disease.

According to the ministry, with tests and studies it was shown that the fungus is not present in the country, so the U.S. Agriculture Department proceeded to remove Costa Rica from the list of countries mentioned in the Federal order.

The order warned about how the importation of bananas from countries in which their production has been affected by the fungus.

The Costa Rican authorities are carrying out guidelines for the prevention of the entry of this pest into the country. For which surveillance visits are made to banana and plantain producing areas, both for internal consumption and for exporting, added the ministry.

In addition, plantations of other products such as coffee and avocado are included in the preventive guidelines. "So far no suspicious symptoms of the disease have been found in the country," the ministry said.

To avoid the risk that products with fungus enter the country, measures have been reinforced with canine inspections and luggage scanning of passengers entering through the main airports. As well as imported products. The goal is to detect any type of fungus.

The same operation is carried out at the land entry points for passengers and products, with meticulous inspections to detect the fungus.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO, bananas (including dessert bananas, plantains, and cooking bananas) are the eighth most important food crop in the world and the fourth most important in the least developed countries.

However, the crop is vulnerable to a number of diseases, including the Black Sigatoka disease, Xanthomonas wilt (BXW), Bunchy Top Disease (BBTD) and Fusarium.

"Among these, Fusarium wilt has been the most difficult to control by chemical or agronomic means due to its soil-borne nature," the organization said in its statement.

Fusarium wilt was effectively controlled for decades by the Cavendish varieties which are resistant to race 1 and 2 of the fungus.

However, the occurrence of TR4 race has significantly changed this situation as Cavendish and many other varieties are highly susceptible to this race. TR4 has been severely affecting banana plantations in Southeast Asia and it was recently reported from Mozambique and Jordan.

Hence TR4 is a growing concern for the banana industry as it is dominated by the Cavendish varieties and there is a fear that it may further spread to Latin America, they said.
