U.S. company open vacancies
in Costa Rica

On Wednesday the Tampa Florida based SYKES, announced 450 vacancies for permanent technical support positions in the company facilities in Costa Rica.

According to the company, the candidates require knowledge of Cisco networks, operating systems, and programming. The company will be hiring from June through September. But because of the health crisis due to covid-19, most positions will be remote.

In addition to technological knowledge, applicants must demonstrate an English level equal to or greater than 85 percent.

Those interested must apply through the company’s website, where they will upload their resume and schedule any corresponding tests and interviews.

For applicants who meet the requirements for technical expertise but not the English level, the company will also offer admission to the SYKES Tech Academy. "The goal is to improve, over short cycles of one to two months, the applicants’ language skills sufficient to secure an offer of employment," said the company in its statement.

According to the company, each new employee will receive a welcome bonus and additionally, the company will extend scholarships to new employees, so that they may take courses from the SYKES Tech Academy to obtain professional certifications in areas such as networks, software development and cybersecurity.

The export of services between 2012 and 2019 saw an upward trend in growth, for an annual average of 6.3%, according to data provided by the Ministry of Foreign Trade. 

More than 72,000 Costa Ricans currently work at 178 companies in the industry, according to the Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency, CINDE. Meaning that productivity per employee, as measured through exports per capita, has risen from US$35,000 in 2005 to US$51,000 in 2019.

SYKES has more than 20 years in Costa Rica, employing more than 5,000 people at their operations in Heredia, Moravia, Hatillo Centro, and San Pedro. 

This is the second U.S. company announcing an expansion of its operations this month.




On May 21, the Swiss-based Pharmaceutical company Roche, a biotech company, announced that it will double the size of its operations in Costa Rica, for its U.S. citizen customers.

The company will hire 370 new employees throughout 2020 and will have over 700 employees by the end of this year.

Roche established its first operation in Costa Rica more than 45 years ago. In 2017, the company launched its Services & Solutions Operation, Roche Services & Solutions, for the Americas in Escazú District, providing Information Technology (IT) services and, a year later, expanded its portfolio to the areas of Procurement and Finance.

The company projects to grow and consolidate over the next three years.

The People Support Solutions (PSS) area will be added to the current operation to provide Human Resources solutions to Roche employees in the Americas.

“The new staff will help us continue providing world-class support for customers throughout the Americas in a variety of languages including English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French," said Héctor Feliú, General Manager of Roche Services. "We have found exceptional talent in Costa Rica and these new positions will strengthen our ability to continue fulfilling our commitment to the organization.”

According to the Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency more than 72,559 people are formally employed in companies belonging to this biotech sector.

Employees from more than 15 different nationalities work at Roche Services & Solutions, providing support and solutions in Spanish, English, Portuguese, and French, said the company in its statement.

Open positions are available in all areas that currently provide support at Roche Services & Solutions in San José: Finance, Procurement, IT, and Human Resources. Some of the current positions that require bilingual and trilingual staff. Those who wish to apply can do so directly at the company careers site.
