covid-19, say authorities

The Ministry of Health authorities confirmed on Wednesday that dexamethasone should not be used as preventive medicine, nor as a treatment in the initial stages of the covid-19 disease.

Dexamethasone is a type of corticosteroid medication used in the treatment of many conditions, including rheumatic problems, several skin diseases, severe allergies, asthma among many others.

According to the ministry, this drug should only be managed under a medical indication.

Daniel Salas, Minister of Health, was emphatic to clarify that "this medicine is only being recommended when the patient reaches a phase where a medical complication occurs, which merits hospitalization and is used only under evaluation and evaluation of the clinical status.”

The use of steroids, such as dexamethasone, can decrease the effective response of the immune system to possible infections, said Salas.

The minister's response came after the results of a clinical study from the University of Oxford was published, which ensures that dexamethasone steroid reduces mortality by one third among the most serious covid-19 patients.

According to the ministry, it is vital to avoid self-medicating. The most effective measures to prevent covid-19 are hand washing, keep the social distancing and social bubbles.

The repeated recommendations are given by the authorities due to the increase in cases of patients with covid-19.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there was an increase of 75 new cases of patients infected with covid-19, bringing the total to 960 active cases, reported the ministry.
