California-based MicroVention-Terumo announced on Monday the investment of $80 million for the expansion of operations with the construction of a third building in the Coyol Free Zone, Alajuela Province.
"Our success in Costa Rica has allowed MicroVention to grow in what is our third expansion in the country," said Charlie Noel, Vice President of the company International Operations. "Today our strategic vision drives us to close 2022 with nearly 35,000 meters squares in manufacturing areas and 3,000 employees."
It is expected the new 20 thousand square meter facilities could be completed in 2022.
Currently, 1,700 employees work for the company in their two other plants, also located in Alajuela. This is where medical devices used in endovascular therapies for the treatment of vascular and brain diseases are manufactured.
The company was founded in 1997, for the production and sale of medical devices that allow or significantly improve the treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. In 2006, the Japanese company Terumo Corporation acquired MicroVention.

This is the second U.S.-based company announcing a multi-million dollar investment in Costa Rica this month.
Last week, California-based Nevro Corp, a global medical device company, announced the opening of its global manufacturing operations in Costa Rica on Tuesday.
The firm is a global medical device company focused on providing medical products as the Senza spinal cord stimulation system, a non-pharmacologic neuromodulation platform for the treatment of chronic pain.
"Nevro has been successful through its early years with outsourced manufacturing and highly supportive supply chain partners," said D. Keith Grossman, Chairman, CEO and President of Nevro. "As part of our growth plans to keep moving forward, Nevro is establishing insourced global manufacturing for its pipeline of future products to ensure that we have the most efficient cost structure and flexible capacity while maintaining the highest level of quality control as we scale."
The company established its 41,000 square foot manufacturing facility in the same Alajuela Free Zone, with an expected investment of approximately $21 million from 2020-2023, according to the Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency, CINDE.
Nevro will be hiring for manufacturing operations and administrative roles. People interested can find information about career opportunities at the company careers site.
As these new companies expand in the country, unemployment continues to be one of the most critical issues in the country. According to the Employment Survey of the National Institute of Statistics and Census, the unemployment rate was at 21.9%, from August to October, meaning the unemployed population reached 526,138 people.
