International News Tropical Storm Fred could hit Florida and parts of the Southeast United States, announced the U.S. National Hurricane Center, NOAA. Specialists forecast from Aug. 13 to 16, anticipate 3 to 5 inches of rain across the Keys and the southern Florida Peninsula, with isolated maximum totals of 8 inches. Heavy rainfall could lead to aerial, urban, and small stream flooding, along with possible rapid river rises. Yesterday, Fred made its way across the Dominican Republic beginning on the south coast of Punta Palenque moving eastward onto the north coast and the Haiti border. According to NOAA, the tropical storm is in effect for Haiti from the northern border with the Dominican Republic to Gonaives; the Turks and Caicos Islands; Southeast Bahamas; and the Cuban provinces of Ciego de Ávila, Camaguey, Las Tunas, Holguin, Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Guantanamo. The natural phenomenon conditions are possible along the northern coast of Haiti, the Turks and Caicos, and the southeastern Bahamas beginning tonight, and in Cuba beginning today, they said.  "Interests elsewhere in Haiti, the Bahamas, Cuba, and the southern Florida Peninsula and the Florida keys should monitor the progress of Fred," NOAA said in its report. The storm's maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km) mainly to the northeast of the center. Fred is expected to weaken to a depression tonight as it crosses Hispaniola. Slow re-intensification is expected to begin tonight.
