made in Costa Rica
against covid-19 advancements By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Advancements have been made for the first test group of 27 covid-19 patients who have received the trial treatment against the virus developed by the Clodomiro Picado Research Institute of the University of Costa Rica, reported Social Security. According to Alfredo Sanabria-Castro, researcher of the Social Security researcher and Willem Bujan, researcher of the University, the analysis carried out will determine the results to scientifically indicate if there is a difference between the two types of treatment produced by the institute. Both treatments were administered to covid-19 patients with a moderate or severe condition of sickness. Most of them with less than 10 days of symptoms, but all of them with two or more risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, asthma, morbid obesity and smoking. These health issues may increase the risk of developing a critical stage of infection. According to Bujan, preliminary analysis doesn't show which one of the two formulations are more effective. There is also no evidence of a difference in safety, which suggests adequate tolerability of both research products. ![]() From September 6 to 18, the treatment was applied to 27 covid-19 patients. Of these 13 received a formulation called "A" and 14 were treated with a formulation called "B." Of the 27 patients, 10 were women and 17 were men. The age range of the study group is between 31 to 77. As of Oct. 1, the results of 16 patients were positive, they left the hospital and were able to continue treatment at home. Of these only one patient had to be hospitalized again, however, the reason for returning to the hospital was for other medical reasons unrelated to the study. The treatment side effect more common was drowsiness which could be related to pre-medication, according to the researchers. However, of the total number of patients, 13 presented complications in the development of the disease, for which some of them were given assisted mechanical ventilation. Of these six died due to covid-19. The cases were patients with ages very close to 70 years, in addition to the presence of multiple health problems that compromised their health, specialists said. According to the specialists, the next step is to start a new study group with covid-19 patients to find the optimal dose of treatment to effectively treat patients in different states of the virus. Scientists' are on the brink of finding an effective treatment against covid-19. According to the updated report of the Ministry of Health on Saturday, the virus continues to spread around the country: 1,353 new covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 33,225 active cases. 14,192 foreign-born people have been infected with a total of 79,182 cases since March, approximately 17.9% of the total cases. 556 patients are being treated in public hospitals, where 213 patients are in ICUs in delicate health conditions (ages range from 1-year-old baby to an 89-year-old person). And 343 patients are in recovery rooms. The majority of the rest of the infected patients are quarantined in their homes. 45,007 coronavirus patients have fully recovered, which is a 56.8% recovery rate of the total cases since March. 143,614 people have been ruled out. 238,248 medical covid-19 tests have been made. 950 deaths of people infected with covid-19, approximately 1.2% death rate of the total cases since March. Of these 361 were women and 589 men. The ages range from 18 to a 100-year-old person. As of Aug. 31, authorities confirmed the death of 32 foreign-born patients. On Friday afternoon the latest case of a young foreign-born victim was registered in the country. According to the brief information provided by the authorities, the patient was an 18-year-old woman who died in Hospital Mexico while she was in labor. She also suffered from hypertension as a health condition of high risk to major complications caused by the virus. Her baby survived. Readers can see the updated number of total patients in each district at the National Distance Education University on its Covid-19 Map. As of Sunday night, the pandemic has killed 1,037,122 patients worldwide, according to recent statistics reported by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University. -------------------- How should health authorities round up more volunteers to apply the study on the treatment against covid-19?
