Traffic Police spent more than $360,000 on 10 electric motorcycles By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The Road Safety Council, an institution in charge of the traffic police, announced the purchase of 10 electric motorcycles for the cost of $363,240. According to the Council, the investment also includes maintenance for 80,000 km, communication radios, signage, helmets, 8 load centers, and their respective installation. "It is estimated that motorcycles travel 250 km on each charge of an electric battery," said the Council in its statement. The announcement of this purchase was in the presence of the First Lady of the Republic, Claudia Dobles, who has promoted actions for the decarbonization of the transport sector and the transition to electric mobility. "As the national electricity matrix is almost 100 percent clean, electric motorcycles are considered to be zero emissions," said First Lady Dobles. "This is one more government action to improve the quality of our air and the health of the population." According to the Council, among the main advantages of motorcycles are: - Low noise emission. - There are no leaks of gasoline and oil because these components are not used. - The savings for non-use of fuel and maintenance are estimated to reach ¢57 colones for each kilometer traveled. - They can be used to patrol both rural and city areas. - They are not heavy which allows for easier control. - They are automatic. - They have high starting power. - They offer braking stability. - They can be recharged anywhere, due to the type of chargers. - Maintenance costs are minimal. - 5-year warranty on batteries with unlimited mileage. This year the government plans to increase their purchases to 53 vehicles and 70 motorcycles for public institutions such as ministries, universities, and banks among others. A.M. Costa Rica reported in November, Costa Rica Post Offices announced the investment of $1.7 million to buy 348 electric motorcycles. ![]() The state-owned company 'Correos de Costa Rica' announced the "Zero Emissions Project". The first step was to purchase 348 electric motorcycles for national package delivery. The mail service plans to replace 70 gas motorcycles by the end of 2019 and complete the replacement of all 348 motorcycles in five years. The total investment will be $1,792,800, which is expected to be recovered through gas savings. The plan "Zero Emissions" is in response to the campaign of the first Lady Dobles, who is encouraging the use of electric transport for zero emissions. "We have clear goals to decarbonize transport, where the public sector is fundamental for the transformation of vehicle fleets," said First Lady Dobles when she announced the purchase of the motorcycles. "The Costa Rica Post Office is an example of what institutions can and are ready to do to advance to zero-emission transport. There will be reductions in noise and CO2 pollution and a significant economic savings." "The replacement of 70 motorcycles in the first year would guarantee a reduction of 81 tons of carbon dioxide per year and a decrease of 6,020 decibels per day by lowering the level of noise pollution," José Jiménez, President of Costa Rica Post Offices. "In five years, with the total replacement of the motorcycles, 623 tons of carbon dioxide will be reduced per day." "With the investment in electric motorcycles, the courier company seeks to become the first state-owned environmental-friendly logistics company," said the Costa Rica Post Office in its statement. --------------------- Do you think electric vehicles are a good investment for reducing CO2 emissions?
