-Friday, December 20, 2019- Traditional
bullfights begin
on Christmas
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
For more than 50 years, the Municipality of San Jose has organized the traditional festival at the end of the year in the city. This festival starts Christmas Day and runs until Jan. 5. Among the most popular events are bullfights, the Tope horse parade the day after Christmas and the carnival at the Zapote fairgrounds. The bullfights will take place in the Plaza de Toros, also in Zapote. They begin on Christmas. In Costa Rica it is illegal to kill or injure bulls, so bullfights are very different from those that can be seen in Spain or México. One of the activities considered fun by Costa Ricans is when a bull is released inside the ring to chase several dozen so-called improvised bullfighters. These are mostly men who have limited experience with bulls. Some would say that a bull is released into a mob. "We want it to make a party that will be never forgotten, both for improvised bullfighters and the public," said Alvaro Lopez, producer of the Bullfighters Games. According to the organizers, this year almost 300 bulls will be used among different games and activities. One unusual game places a handful of men and sometimes a woman into a well marked section. Then the bull is released. If a player moved out of the marked section to dodge a bull, he or she is out of the game. The last individual remaining in the marked area usually wins a money prize. Another event places men on a seesaw. As a bull approaches, a participant goes up in the air out of reach. But his companion on the device goes lower. Consequently the bull becomes confused moving from one side to the other. Usually the bull fails to gore either player. Organizers have to be creative in providing new attractions and gimmicks with the bull because sometimes the events are twice a day. Although the joke is that someone needs to be inebriated to get in a ring with a fighting bull, the truth is that all of the participants are sober because they know they are risking their lives. The organizers make money by selling tickets specifically for the bull baiting events and also television rights that show the spectacle around the world. The encounters with the bulls are aired on local channels, too. Organizers said that more than 250 people will be improvised bullfighters. Each is supposed to buy a special insurance policy from the National insurance Institute. The first bullfight in the Zapote ring was held in 1969. Before that year the bullfights were held in Plaza Víquez since 1846. The New Year's Eve festival in San José is a tradition that always takes place in the last week of December and the first in January. According to the historian Marilyn Ramírez Pomeniac, in her book "History of the San José Civic Festivities," the feasts of San José were born almost with the independent life of the country, when in 1824 a law decreed the celebration in the four main existing cities, Cartago, the capital of that time; San José, Alajuela and Heredia. "However, in the particular case of San José, their celebrations were to be held in honor of José de Nazaret on March 19, in the middle of Lent, so the authorities decided to move the fair for December, and celebrate the end of the year, " said Ramirez in the book. The festival and carnival have free admission but tickets for the bull ring are on sale there or at specialticket.net. -------------------- Did you know that a few expats have participated in the improvised bullfighter's games?
