With 31 votes for and 8 against, the deputies of Congress approved bill No. 22,405, which authorizes tourism business owners to reduce the working hours of their employees, due to the National Declaration of Health Emergency for the pandemic.

Employers can reduce the working hours of their employees without this implying that the labor law was broken.

According to the Tourism Institute, this law has the goal of protecting employees in the tourism sector. This is because companies that have registered reductions in their income, will be able to reduce their employee's working hours and reduce operating costs.

The goal of the law is to prevent business owners from firing employees because they are unable to continue paying their wages.

The law allows the reduction of working hours that may be extended for four equal periods of three months each, which could be equivalent to 9 months.

"We welcome the commitment of the deputies to turn this relevant bill into a Law, which will provide relief to all tourism employers," Alberto López, General Manager of the institute said.

According to López, the law will allow many workers in the tourism sector to have access to a part-time workday instead of being fired or not being hired.
