Tortuguero National Park offers turtle arrival tours

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The park rangers of the Tortuguero National Park*, located on the Caribbean Coast, in the province of Limon, are offering guided tours to see the arrival of hundreds of sea turtles, which come to lay their eggs on the coast.

The guided tours allow for a large number of tourists to arrive at the beach during the season of nesting sea turtles.

The park has a group of turtle trackers, who are trained to detect turtles when they are leaving the sea.

The rakers help "prevent large numbers of tourists from walking on the beach and accidentally driving away the turtles," the park rangers said in its statement.

This is the season of the year where there are more turtle arrivals, especially the Green turtle (Chelonia mydas), the Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), the Carey (Eretmochelys imbricata), and Loggerhead (Caretta caretta).

In addition, during this season many other tropical animals and birds are also seen such as the Great Green Macaw (Ara ambigua), the Spectacled Caiman (Caiman crocodilus), Jacana (Jacana jacana) and the Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga), pumas, and manatee, among others.

According to the Tourism Institute, among the most important nesting areas in the Western Hemisphere of the endangered green turtle, the stunning Tortuguero National Park lies on Costa Rica’s beautiful Caribbean coast in the northeastern region of the country.

Roughly 50 miles north of Puerto Limon and bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to its east, the Tortuguero National Park sits adjacent to the Refugio Barra del Colorado to its north.

Tortuguero was declared a national park in 1970 to protect the green turtle population of the world from extinction, this park is also a wildlife sanctuary for monkeys, jaguars, green macaws, tapirs, and a variety of other mammals, birds and reptiles.

The schedule for visiting the park is from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, every day of the week. The entrance fee is between $5 to $15 for foreign tourists.

For more information, the park has enabled the number 2709 8086
