Three jailed as suspects of developing
a hydroponic marijuana lab

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Agents from the Judicial Investigation Organization arrested three men on suspicion of developing a hydroponic marijuana laboratory.

According to the agents' report, on Saturday an anonymous caller alerted them about a marijuana production laboratory that was inside an apartment located in the Bella Vista district in Guápiles, Limón Province.

The agents raided the apartment, finding a total of 40 marijuana plants approximately one and a half meters high each.

The plants were produced hydroponically, said the agents in its report. The laboratory had an automatic irrigation system, lighting system, and ventilation system, as well as tools and agricultural supplies for the cultivation and maintenance of marijuana plants.

According to information provided by the agents, this laboratory allegedly belongs to three Costa Ricans, who had been arrested on Friday morning for other minor crimes.

In addition to the arrests, the officers proceeded to confiscate the marijuana plants and the laboratory supplies that will be used as evidence for the investigation.

The three men were taken to the cells of the Public Ministry where they were interrogated by judicial agents and they must wait until a judge orders pretrial measures against them.

This is the second case of a marijuana crop detected during this month.

On March 25, the Drug Control Police found several crops of approximately 361,735 marijuana plants that were inside a mountainous area of the Talamanca district in Limón Province.

According to the police report, as a result of a special operation in the area, 44 plantations of the plan were found in hill areas such as Tortuga, Hule, Seira, Papayo, Sey, Alto Piedra Mesa, Guayabal and Monte Verde. All of these in the Talamanca district.

The police reported having destroyed the plantations, in addition to opening an investigation to find those responsible for having planted the marijuana plants.

No detainees were reported in this case.
