Since March 16, government authorities applied precautionary measures due to the rise of patients infected with coronavirus covid-19. All public and private schools, colleges, universities and academies suspended classes. Most of the public employees are working from home.

This has caused an increase in the pattern of internet spending in the country during one week, from March 16 to 22, said the Ministry of Technology.

According to the ministry, internet use in homes increased 50 percent. Also, the use of the internet in devices such as cell phones and tablets increased by 20 percent.

Cable companies reported an increased use of the contracted capacity of international optic fiber cable services.

Ministry authorities call on the public to prioritize the use of the internet for studies and work. They also recommended moderate use of the internet for leisure time.

"We call for calm to Costa Ricans, as the telecommunications sector is working to meet the demand for services, so that we all have access to telework, health, study, information and entertainment through digital channels in this time of global emergency,” said Luis Adrián Salazar, Minister of Technology.

The ministry is taking steps for the continuity of the internet service with the expectation that usage will continue to increase.

Among the most recent measures are: the purchase of International Bandwidth, the extension of call center hours available to answer consumer questions, increase in Internet Exchange Points IXP and fast attention to breakdowns.

"In this way, telecommunications operators are constantly monitoring their networks, to analyze the evolution of demand for bandwidth, in order to guarantee the continuity of services," said the ministry in their statement.

Authorities recommend consumers to avoid saturation of internet services by:

- Downloading only the necessary files.

- Avoid exchanging, sending or getting, heavy files.

- Avoid sending massive messages, so-called chain messages.

- Use fewer voice messages.

- Deactivate applications that are not using

- Similarly, close web pages that are not in use.

People who are detecting a decrease in the quality of their paid internet service can report it to the Superintendency of Telecommunications at 800-88-7-8835.
