Data from the Ministry of Labor showed 9,712 job vacancies in international private companies, offered in the first quarter of this year, from January to March.

According to the government, this increase in job vacancies is a direct response to the consolidation of the country as a partner for many international companies who are looking for quality workers, as well as to the improvement on public infrastructures such as roads, schools and hospitals.

These signs of recovery coincide with higher dynamism in the economy, stability and confidence by companies. In addition to the decrease in unemployment, which went from 24.4% six months ago to 19.1%, the government said in its statement.

According to President Carlos Alvarado, the increase in job vacancies, mostly in foreign companies, is due to the strategy to attract foreign direct investment.

"This is why proposals have been developed with the goal of continuing to generate more employment and opportunities in these rural areas," Alvarado said.

Among the actions of the strategy to attract foreign investment is the improvement in infrastructures, such as the overpasses being built between the cantons of Taras and La Lima, in Cartago Province, or the expansion of the so-called Angostura highway in Puntarenas Province.

Among the international companies that have operations in the country, with job vacancies are Biomerics, Intel, Roche, Concentrix, Bill Gosling, Centro 27 EscazĂș and Zona Franca Coyol.

Many of these vacancies correspond to companies that are located outside of the Greater Metropolitan Area, GMA, which is the zone made up of cities in the outskirts of San José such as Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago. For example, the call center company SYKES offered 500 job vacancies for its Liberia headquarters.

According to data from the Ministry of Labor, between May and July 2020, 261,000 people had found a job.

However, despite the high numbers announced by the government, the unemployment rate continues to be one of the most critical issues in the country. According to the Employment Survey, from November 2020 to January 2021, the unemployment rate was 19.1% meaning there are 468,000 unemployed people.
