The first driving course for the hearing impaired begins in the country By

The General Directorate of Road Education announced the beginning of the first driving course for hearing-impaired people. According to the Directorate, the first course started in the province of Cartago*. However, this course will soon be announced in the other regions. The lessons and subject matter have been adjusted so people with hearing impairments may attend. "The adjustments both in the course and in the test, are intended to provide equal conditions to this population to begin their journey towards accreditation as drivers," said the General Directorate in its statement. In the first course, 18 students participated with the support of a driving instructor from the General Directorate and a LESCO interpreter. In addition to the course, the written test was also adapted. When the user accesses it on the computer, a video displays each question and the respective response option. According to the General Directorate, a pilot test on these courses was developed in July, at the Paso Ancho headquarters in San Jose. This pilot plan was validated by authorities of the Directorate, nine people with hearing impairments, and one LESCO interpreter. "Students who approve the theoretical course will have the support of an interpreter during the practical test as well," said the Directorate in its statement.
