first cruise ship of the season arrives in Golfito
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff The first cruise liner of the 2019-2020 season arrived over the weekend in the southern Pacific port of Golfito*. The liner is the Crystal Symphony cruise hotel with 639 passengers and 590 crew members. The Costa Rican Institute of Pacific Ports, known as INCOP, was in charge of the port operation and reception of this ship. The 238 meter-long craft in length docked and passengers visited the craft shops and took various tours offered by local operators. "Golfito can have enormous tourist potential, a place that has been considered by tourists themselves as one of the favorite spots for surfing, fishing and adventure," said Juan Ramón-Rivera, president of INCOP. According to the authorities, during this year more than $1,237,819 have been invested in improvements in the port, including a reception hall for tourists, replacement of the electrical system, fire fighting system upgrades, among others. Crystal Cruises is an American luxury cruise line, which has been awarded for being the best cruise company in the world due to its gastronomic offers, cultural programs, activities on board and the services offered by its crew and its facilities, said INCOP in its statement.  As A.M. Costa Rica reported Monday, the Board of Port Administration of Limón hosted the Sunday arrival of 2,129 passengers and 896 crew members of the Island Princess, the second cruise liner there for 2019-2020 season. According to the board, the cruise ship departed Oct. 7 from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and traversed the Atlantic Ocean until it arrived in Panamá. It then sailed to the Hernán Garrón port* in the Province of Limón. Local tourist operators offered to the cruise liner passengers a new tour, two hours in a boat along the Caribbean coast to Uvita Island.* The liner left headed to Falmouth in Jamaica. The board announced that as of November there will be art exhibitions at the Hernán Garrón Terminal "as part of the new attractions for cruise ship tourists." On Sept. 23 the first cruise ship of the season arrived in Limón. The Carnival Fantasy arrived at the port with more than 2,000 tourists and 893 crew members. That ship also came from Panamá. The season of cruises ends approximately in March 2020. During this period, the Tourism Institute has estimated the arrival of 112 cruise ships, 224,000 tourists and more than 90,000 crew members arriving in Limón. ------------------------ What should authorities do to increase the cruise line arrivals at Golfito?
